The preservation of fresh-cut fruits and vegetables has attracted attention to the shelf-life reduction caused by high humidity. Herein, alginate/copper ions cross-linking, in-situ growth and self-assembly techniques of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were utilized to prepare a moisture responsive hydrogel bead (HKUST-1@ALG). As the multistage porous structure formation, tea tree essential oil (TTO) load capacity in hydrogel bead (TTO-HKUST-1@ALG) was increased from 6.1% to 21.6%. TTO-HKUST-1@ALG had excellent moisture response performance, and the release rates of TTO increased from 33.89% to 70.98% with moisture increasing from 45% to 95%. Besides, TTO-HKUST-1@ALG exhibited excellent antimicrobial, antioxidant capacity, and biocompatibility. During storage, TTO-HKUST-1@ALG effectively improved the cell membrane integrity by maintaining the balance of reactive oxygen species metabolism. The degradation of cell wall structure and tissue softening were delayed by inhibiting the cell wall-degrading enzymes activity. Briefly, TTO-HKUST-1@ALG improved the storage quality and extended shelf-life of fresh-cut pineapple, which was a promising preservative.

Background: The impact of direct and indirect drivers on linear growth and wasting in young children is of public health interest. While the contributions of poverty, maternal education, empowerment and birth weight to early childhood growth are well recognized, the contribution of environmental factors like heat, precipitation, agriculture outputs and food security in comparable datasets is less well established.

Objectives: To investigate the association of length-for-age z-score (LAZ) and weight-for-length z-score (WLZ) with various indicators among children under 2 years of age in Pakistan using representative household level nutrition surveys and ecological datasets.

Uncontrolled release of active agents in active packaging reduces antimicrobial efficacy, hindering the effective protection of perishable products from microbial infection. Herein, a novel defective engineering was proposed to design defective and hollow ZIF-8 structures grown on TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNFs) and use them as fast-reacting nanocarriers for loading and controlled release curcumin (Cur) in sodium alginate (SA) active packaging systems (CZT-Cur-SA). By employing stable chelation between tannic acid (TA) and ZIF-8 zinc ions, the connections between zinc ions and imidazole ligands were severed to form a loose and hollow structure, which facilitates the rapid reaction and release of active ingredients triggered by pH changes in the microenvironment.

Owing to its extensive use and intrinsic toxicity, NH detection is very crucial. Moisture can cause significant interference in the performance of sensors, and detecting NH in high humidity is still a challenge. In this work, a humidity-activated NH sensor was prepared by urocanic acid (URA) modifying poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) via a thiol-ene click cross-linking reaction.

Mangroves, as blue carbon reservoirs, provide a unique habitat for supporting a variety of microorganisms. Among these, bacteria play crucial roles in the biogeochemical processes of mangrove sediments. However, little is known about their community composition, spatial distribution patterns, and environmental driving factors, particularly across the large geographical scales of mangrove wetlands.

This study aimed to enhance the properties and compostability of active poly(lactic acid) (PLA) films by incorporating β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) inclusion complexes with allyl isothiocyanate (AITC). Films were prepared using melt extrusion and characterized based on their structural, chemical, morphological, thermal, and barrier properties. These inclusion complexes improved the thermal stability and moisture absorption of films, enhancing disintegration under composting conditions.
