Two-dimensional nanofluidics based on naturally abundant clay are good candidates for harvesting osmotic energy between the sea and river from the perspective of commercialization and environmental sustainability. However, clay-based nanofluidics outputting long-term considerable osmotic power remains extremely challenging to achieve due to the lack of surface charge and mechanical strength. Here, a two-dimensional all-natural nanofluidic (2D-NNF) is developed as a robust and highly efficient osmotic energy generator based on an interlocking configuration of stacked montmorillonite nanosheets (from natural clay) and their intercalated cellulose nanofibers (from natural wood). The generated nano-confined interlamellar channels with abundant surface and space negative charges facilitate selective and fast hopping transport of cations in the 2D-NNF. This contributes to an osmotic power output of ~8.61 W m by mixing artificial seawater and river water, higher than other reported state-of-the-art 2D nanofluidics. According to detailed life cycle assessments (LCA), the 2D-NNF demonstrates great advantages in resource consumption (1/14), greenhouse gas emissions (1/9), and production costs (1/13) compared with the mainstream 2D nanofluidics, promising good sustainability for large-scale and highly-efficient osmotic power generation.

Heteropolar two-dimensional materials, including hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), are promising candidates for seawater desalination and osmotic power harvesting, but previous simulation studies have considered bare, unterminated nanopores in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. There is presently a lack of force fields to describe functionalized nanoporous hBN in aqueous media. To address this gap, we conduct density functional theory (DFT)-based ab initio MD simulations of hBN nanopores surrounded by water molecules.

Airborne wind energy is an emerging technology that can harness stronger and more consistent winds in higher altitudes using less mechanical and civil infrastructures than conventional wind energy systems. This article outlines a techno-economic study on using this technology for reverse osmosis seawater desalination in which a semi-permeable membrane process is used to remove salts and contaminants from water. To understand the techno-economic feasibility of such a system, this research work studies a 2 MW airborne wind-driven reverse osmosis plant.

Large-scale optimal design problems involving nonlinear differential equations are widely applied in modeling such as craft manufacturing, chemical engineering and energy engineering. Herein we propose a fast and flexible holomorphic embedding-based method to solve nonlinear differential equations quickly, and further apply it to handle the industrial application of reverse osmosis desalination. Without solving nonlinear differential equations at each discrete point by a traditional small-step iteration approach, the proposed method determines the solution through an approximation function or approximant within segmented computational domain independently.

Polyamide (PA) membranes are widely utilized in desalination and water treatment applications, yet the mechanisms underlying water transport within these amorphous polymer materials remain insufficiently understood. To gain more insight into these problems on a microscopic scale, we employ molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to analyze the relationship between the structural properties and the water permeation behavior of PA membranes. Two distinct atomistic models of PA membranes are developed by controlling their degrees of cross-linking (DC).

Frost damage to apple flowers significantly affects both the quality and yield of apples, potentially leading to substantial economic losses. This study investigates the application of the environmentally friendly plant hormone 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) on apple flowers to assess its effects under frost stress conditions. The findings indicate that exogenous EBR treatment maintained favorable flower morphology, mitigated pistil browning, and reduced ion leakage.
