Palladium hydrides (PdH) are pivotal in both fundamental research and practical applications across a wide spectrum. PdH nanocrystals, synthesized by heating in dimethylformamide (DMF), exhibit remarkable stability, granting them widespread applications in the field of electrocatalysis. However, this stability appears inconsistent with their metastable nature. The substantial challenges in characterizing nanoscale structures contribute to the limited understanding of this anomalous phenomenon. Here, through a series of well-conceived experimental designs and advanced characterization techniques, including aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-STEM), in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), we have uncovered evidence that indicates the presence of C and N within the lattice of Pd (PdCN), rather than H (PdH). By combining theoretical calculations, we have thoroughly studied the potential configurations and thermodynamic stability of PdCN, demonstrating a 2.5:1 ratio of C to N infiltration into the Pd lattice. Furthermore, we successfully modulated the electronic structure of Pd nanocrystals through C and N doping, enhancing their catalytic activity in methanol oxidation reactions. This breakthrough provides a new perspective on the structure and composition of Pd-based nanocrystals infused with light elements, paving the way for the development of advanced catalytic materials in the future.

Understanding the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) mechanism is pivotal for improving the overall efficiency of water electrolysis. Despite methylammonium lead halide perovskites (MAPbX) have shown promising OER performance due to their soft-lattice nature that allows lattice-oxygen oxidation of active α-PbO layer surface, the role of A-site MA or X-site elements in the electrochemical reconstruction and OER mechanisms has yet to be explored. Here, it is demonstrated that the OER mechanism of perovskite@zeolite composites is intrinsically dominated by the A-site group of lead-halide perovskites, while the type of X-site halogen is crucial for the reconstruction kinetics of the composites.

We introduce our proprietary Materials Informatics (MI) technologies and our chemistry-oriented methodology for exploring new inorganic functional materials. Using machine learning on crystal structure databases, we developed 'Element Reactivity Maps' that displays the presence or the predicted formation probability of compounds for combinations of 80 × 80 × 80 elements. By analysing atomic coordinates with Delaunay tetrahedral decomposition, we established the concept of Delaunay Chemistry.

Nine manganese(II) complexes with a series of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (namely sodium diclofenac, diflunisal, flufenamic acid, sodium meclofenamate, mefenamic acid, and tolfenamic acid) were prepared in the presence of diverse nitrogen donors, i.e., pyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline, 2,2'-bipyridine and neocuproine, as co-ligands and were characterized with spectroscopic techniques and single-crystal X-ray crystallography.

Incorporation of High-Entropy Doped Microregions into 5 V Spinel Oxide for Ultra-Long Cycling Lifespan.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, School of Optical and Electronic Information, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430074, China.

As a leading candidate for high-voltage, cobalt-free cathodes, spinel LiNiMnO (LNMO) oxide is highly attractive for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. However, the instability of cation-oxygen bonds (especially Mn-O) and the adverse two-phase transition of LNMO result in rapid crystal collapse during cycling, thus limiting its practical deployment. To address these issues, herein we exploit the differences in miscibility between dopants and the spinel matrix to embed high-entropy doped microregions (HEDRs, 5-15 nm in size) within the spinel.

The role of self-intercalation in 2D van der Waals materials is key to the understanding of many of their properties. Here we show that the magnetic ordering temperature of thin films of the 2D ferromagnet Fe_{5}GeTe_{2} is substantially increased by self-intercalated Fe that resides in the van der Waals gaps. The epitaxial films were prepared by molecular beam epitaxy and their magnetic properties explored by element-specific x-ray magnetic circular dichroism that showed ferromagnetic ordering up to 375 K.
