Heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF) is a transmembrane protein that, when cleaved by metalloproteases through a process called ectodomain shedding, binds to the EGF receptor (EGFR), activating downstream signaling. The HB-EGF/EGFR pathway is crucial in development and is involved in numerous pathophysiological processes. In this issue of The FEBS Journal, Sireci et al. reveal a previously unexplored function of the HB-EGF/EGFR pathway in promoting neuronal progenitor proliferation and sensory neuron regeneration in the zebrafish olfactory epithelium in response to injury.

We previously reported the neurotoxic effects of arsenic in the hippocampus. Here, we explored the involvement of Wnt pathway, which contributes to neuronal functions. Administering environmentally relevant arsenic concentrations to postnatal day-60 (PND60) mice demonstrated a dose-dependent increase in hippocampal Wnt3a and its components, Frizzled, phospho-LRP6, Dishevelled and Axin1 at PND90 and PND120.

Introduction: Kidney injury is clinically classified as crescentic glomerulonephritis (CrGN) when ≥50% of the glomeruli in a biopsy sample contain crescentic lesions. However, current strategies, such as systemic immunosuppressive therapy and plasmapheresis for CrGN, are partially effective, and these drugs have considerable systemic side effects. The dysregulation of microRNAs (miRNAs) and their potential functions has been an important direction for elucidating the mechanism of preeclampsia in recent years.
