A water-soluble colorimetric chemosensor NHOP ((E)-1-(2-(2-(2-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzylidene)hydrazineyl)-2-oxoethyl)pyridin-1-ium) chloride) was developed for the sequential probing of Cu and S. NHOP underwent a color change from pale yellow to colorless in the presence of Cu in pure water. The binding ratio between NHOP and Cu was confirmed to be 1:1 by the Job plot and ESI-MS (electrospray ionization mass spectrometry). The detection limit of NHOP for Cu was calculated as 0.15 μM, which was far below the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) standard (20 μM). The NHOP-coated test strip was able to easily monitor Cu in real-time. Meanwhile, the NHOP-Cu complex reverted from colorless to pale yellow in the presence of S through the demetallation. The stoichiometric ratio between NHOP-Cu and S was determined to be 1:1 by analyzing the Job plot and ESI-MS. The detection limit of NHOP-Cu for S was calculated as 0.29 μM, which was very below the WHO (World Health Organization) guideline (14.7 μM). NHOP successfully achieved the quantification for Cu and S in water samples. NHOP could work as a sequential probe for Cu and S at the biological pH range (7.0-8.4). Moreover, NHOP could successively probe Cu and S at least three cycles because of its reversible property. The detection mechanisms of NHOP for Cu and NHOP-Cu for S were demonstrated with Job plot, ESI-MS, and DFT (density functional theory) calculations. Therefore, NHOP could work as an efficient sequential probe for Cu and S in environmental systems.

A new rhodamine based turn on florescent probe ()-3',6'-bis(ethylamino)-2-(((6-methoxy-2-oxo-1,2-dihydroquinolin-3-yl)methylene)amino)-2',7'-dimethylspiro[isoindoline-1,9'-xanthen]-3-one (RME) was efficiently synthesized through a simple condensation reaction of 2-amino-3',6'-bis(ethylamino)-2',7'-dimethylspiro[isoindoline-1,9'-xanthen]-3-one and 6-methoxy-2-oxo-1,2-dihydroquinoline-3-carbaldehyde. The receptor RME is highly non-fluorescent and when copper ions (Cu ions) are added in DMF/water (1 : 2, v/v) medium, the receptor RME exhibits a specific "turn-on" colorimetric and fluorometric response. Moreover, RME binding with Cu ions produced a remarkable color variation that was perceptible to the human eye, changing from colorless to pink.

Anions play a crucial role in various environmental, chemical, and biological processes. Among various anions, the production of perchlorate (ClO ) ion is expected to rise in upcoming years, and thus, an efficient method for the detection of perchlorate ion is highly desirable. In this effort, a pyridyl-benzimidazole-based luminescent probe (RSB1) containing two N-H donor sites has been synthesized for selective detection of perchlorate ion.

A new corrole derivative bearing 8-hydroxyquinoline moiety, which was labeled as 8-HQ-Corrole, serves as an efficient fluorescent probe for Mg in the presence of various interferents. This probe 8-HQ-Corrole displayed an ultra-fast response (2 s) to Mg with an impressive detection limit (33 nM) and a significant fluorescence enhancement, accompanying with a blue shift from 667 to 653 nm in fluorescence spectrum. MS and Job's plot analysis indicated that the enhanced fluorescence response was attributable to the formation of 1:2 stoichiometric complex between to Mg and 8-HQ-Corrole involving quinoline nitrogen and oxygen atoms.
