Oxidative stress is implicated in the pathogenesis of various acute disorders including ischemia/reperfusion injury, ultraviolet/radiation burn, as well as chronic disorders such as dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, chronic renal disease, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, the precise mechanism involved remains to be clarified. We formerly identified a novel apoptosis-inducing humoral protein, in a hypoxia/reoxygenation-conditioned medium of cardiac myocytes, which proved to be 69th tyrosine-sulfated eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A (eIF5A). We named this novel tyrosine-sulfated secreted form of eIF5A Oxidative Stress-Responsive Apoptosis-Inducing Protein (ORAIP). To investigate the role of ORAIP in a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced murine model of ulcerative colitis (UC), we analyzed the effects of in vivo treatment with anti-ORAIP neutralizing monoclonal antibody (mAb) on the DSS-induced disease exacerbation. The body weight in anti-ORAIP mAb-treated group was significantly heavier than that in a mouse IgG-treated control group on day 8 of DSS-treatment ((85.21 ± 1.03%) vs. (77.38 ± 2.07%); (mean ± SE0, = 5 each, < 0.01, -test). In vivo anti-ORAIP mAb-treatment also significantly suppressed the shortening of colon length as well as Disease Activity Index (DAI) score ((5.00 ± 0.44) vs. (8.20 ± 0.37); (mean ± SE), = 5 each, < 0.001, -test) by suppressing inflammation of the rectal tissue and apoptosis of intestinal mucosal cells. These data reveal the pivotal role of ORAIP in DSS-induced oxidative stress involved in an animal model of UC.

Curcumin and bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs)-derived exosomes are considered to be useful for the treatment of many human diseases, including sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI). However, the role and underlying molecular mechanism of curcumin-loaded BMSCs-derived exosomes in the progression of SA-AKI remain unclear. Exosomes (BMSCs-EXO or BMSCs-EXO) were isolated from curcumin or DMSO-treated BMSCs, and then co-cultured with LPS-induced HK2 cells.

Heat shock factor (HSF)-type regulators are stress-responsive transcription factors widely distributed among eukaryotes, including fungi. They carry a four-stranded winged helix-turn-helix DNA-binding domain considered as the signature domain for HSFs. The genome of the opportunistic yeast encodes four HSF members, namely, Sfl1, Sfl2, Skn7, and the essential regulator, Hsf1.

Fungi can remarkably sense and adapt to various extracellular stimuli and stress conditions. Oxidative stress, which results from an imbalance between reactive oxygen species production and antioxidant defenses, leads to cellular damage and death. In , oxidative stress is managed by a complex antioxidant system, including thioredoxins, glutathione, catalases, peroxidases, and superoxide dismutase, with glutathione playing a crucial role.

Energy is required for growth as well as for multiple cellular processes. During evolution, plants developed regulatory mechanisms to adapt energy consumption to metabolic reserves and cellular needs. Reduced growth is often observed under stress, leading to a growth-stress trade-off that governs plant performance under different conditions.

Exposure to saline environments significantly hampers the growth and productivity of oil crops, harmfully affecting their nutritional quality and suitability for biofuel production. This presents a critical challenge, as understanding salt tolerance mechanisms in crops is key to improving their performance in coastal and high-salinity regions. Our content might be read more properly: This review assembles current knowledge on protein-level changes related to salinity resistance in oil crops.
