Owing to stringent vehicle emission regulations and the shifting automotive landscape towards clean-energy vehicles, the emission of non-exhaust tire-wear particles and its implications for microplastic contamination have garnered substantial attention, emerging as a focal point of research interest. Unlike traditional source apportionment methods involving direct environmental sampling, this study focuses on the physical and chemical attributes of tire treads, the tread temperature changes, and the tire-wear particle emissions of three light-duty vehicles manufactured between 2011 and 2021. This study advances the understanding of the effects of tire properties on particle emissions, which provides preliminary information on low-wear tires. The results show that tire-wear particle emissions, mainly composed of ultrafine particles in terms of number, heavily depend on the elevated tread temperatures. The change in tread temperature is influenced not only by the initial tread temperature but also by tread pyrolysis characteristics. Ca, Mg, and Zn are abundantly contained in the tire tread and tire-wear particles.

The ecological impact of tire wear particles (TWP), a significant source of microplastics pollution, is increasingly concerning, especially given their potential effects on the health of aquatic ecosystems. This study investigates the size-dependent ecotoxicological responses of zebrafish (Danio rerio) to TWP exposure, focusing on physiological, metabolic, and microbial community impacts over a 15-day exposure period followed by a 15-day excretion period. Through integrated analysis of gut microbiome composition, liver transcriptomics, and host physiological markers, we found that smaller TWP particles (< 120 μm) induced oxidative stress, evidenced by increased SOD and MDA levels, and inhibited growth by reducing body mass and gut length.

Nanoplastics are suspected to pollute every environment on Earth, including very remote areas reached via atmospheric transport. We approached the challenge of measuring environmental nanoplastics by combining high-sensitivity TD-PTR-MS (thermal desorption-proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometry) with trained mountaineers sampling high-altitude glaciers ("citizen science"). Particles < 1 μm were analysed for common polymers (polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene and tire wear particles), revealing nanoplastic concentrations ranging 2-80 ng mL at five of 14 sites.

Tire wear microplastics (TWMs) are continuously generated during driving and are subsequently released into the environment, where they pose potential risks to aquatic organisms. In this study, the effects of untreated, hydrated, and aged (in stream water) TWMs on the growth, root development, photosynthesis, electron transport system (ETS) activity, and energy-rich molecules of duckweed Lemna minor were investigated. The results indicated that untreated and aged TWMs have the most pronounced negative effects on Lemna minor, as evidenced by reduced growth and impaired root development.
