Background: Food insecurity (FI) is a disturbance of eating patterns due to lack of resources, preventing consistent access to healthy foods. FI negatively impacts health outcomes and increases care cost.

Objectives: The primary objective was to (a) explore patient willingness to screen with the 2-question Hunger Vital Sign tool and (b) accept education regarding food assistance programs at their community pharmacy. The secondary objective was to gauge pharmacy personnel's comfort with utilizing the screener and providing education.

Practice Description: Screenings occurred from February to May 2023 at supermarket-based pharmacies in counties above state average FI prevalence.

Practice Innovation: This study evaluated responses to a 9-item FI screening questionnaire that was offered to patients presenting to the pharmacy. Personnel offered patients education about resources and documented responses. Pharmacies provided survey responses to detail their experiences.

Evaluation Methods: This mixed-methods observational pilot study received approval from Idaho State University's institutional review board. Objective 1(a) was assessed by recording the number of patients agreeing or declining to participate. Objective 1(b) was evaluated by recording the number of patients who accepted education. The secondary objective was appraised by gathering survey responses from personnel. Results were analyzed with descriptive statistics.

Results: Of patients asked to participate, 163 (73.1%) agreed. Forty-one agreed but did not submit responses. Of patients agreeing, 123 (75.5%) accepted education. Of patients submitting responses, 56 (49.5%) screened as at-risk for FI. Regarding comfort engaging in the innovation, 4 pharmacies (50.0%) reported being comfortable, 3 (37.5%) neither comfortable nor uncomfortable, and 1 (12.5%) uncomfortable. Qualitative information collected from personnel highlighted meaningful interactions and how this will change their approach to pharmacy practice.

Conclusion: Supermarket-based pharmacists may be able to detect and educate on FI. Patients in the study screened at a higher rate of at-risk for FI than their counties reported. Many patients accepted education regardless of screening results.

Background: The positive association of parental phubbing with internalizing and externalizing problems among adolescents has gained academic traction. However, current researches on the negative impacts of parental phubbing have focused primarily on adolescents, with a noticeable lack of studies concerning preschool children, and there is also a deficiency in investigations from the perspective of the Risky Family Model. These gaps limit our understanding of how parental phubbing affects problem behaviors among preschool children.

Use of virtual reality to remotely train healthcare professionals in paediatric emergency tracheostomy skills: protocol for a multi-centre, non-inferiority educational interventional study with historical controls.

BMC Surg

January 2025

Division of Immunology, Immunity to Infection, and Respiratory Medicine, School of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, The University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9PL, UK.

Background: The insertion of a tracheostomy is an established technique used to wean patients off ventilatory support, manage secretions in complex conditions, and as a potentially life-saving procedure to bypass upper airway obstruction. Life-threatening complications during aftercare are not uncommon and may be influenced by a lack of education of carers or healthcare providers of children and young people living with a tracheostomy. Education programmes designed and supported by the National Tracheostomy Safety Project are effective, but resources are not available to educate the workforce at scale.

Introduction: Stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) is a major cause of mortality during the acute phase of stroke. The ADS score is widely used to predict SAP risk but does not include 24-h non-contrast computed tomography-Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (NCCT-ASPECTS) or red cell distribution width (RDW). We aim to evaluate the added prognostic value of incorporating 24-h NCCT-ASPECTS and RDW into the ADS score and to develop a novel prediction model for SAP following thrombolysis.

Nonacademic predictors of China medical licensing examination.

BMC Med Educ

Department of Radiology and Tianjin Key Lab of Functional Imaging and Tianjin Institute of Radiology and State Key Laboratory of Experimental Hematology, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, Tianjin, 300052, China.

Background: National Medical Licensing Examination (NMLE) is the entrance exam for medical practice in China, and its general medical knowledge test (GMKT) evaluates abilities of medical students to comprehensively apply medical knowledge to clinical practice. This study aimed to identify nonacademic predictors of GMKT performance, which would benefit medical schools in designing appropriate strategies and techniques to facilitate the transition from medical students to qualified medical practitioners.

Methods: In 1202 medical students, we conducted the deletion-substitution-addition (DSA) and structural equation model (SEM) analyses to identify nonacademic predictors of GMKT performance from 98 candidate variables including early life events, physical conditions, psychological and personality assessments, cognitive abilities, and socioeconomic conditions.

Comparison of the safety of esophagojejunal overlap and π-shaped anastomosis in totally laparoscopic total gastrectomy.

BMC Surg

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Carcinogenesis and Translational Research (Ministry of Education/Beijing), Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery IV, Peking University Cancer Hospital & Institute, Beijing, 100142, China.

Background: Globally, totally laparoscopic total gastrectomy is increasingly being accepted by surgeons for the treatment of gastric cancer. Overlap anastomosis and π-shaped anastomosis are the two most commonly used anastomosis methods in total laparoscopic surgery; however, their safety and suitability for the population are still unclear.

Methods: A total of 162 consecutive patients with gastric cancer who underwent total laparoscopic total gastrectomy with overlap or π-shaped anastomosis were retrospectively analyzed.
