Clinical characteristics and BGA-optimized pretest probability of pulmonary embolism in the elderly.

Med Klin Intensivmed Notfmed

January 2025

University Heart Center Lübeck, Department of Cardiology, Angiology and Intensive Care Medicine, University of Lübeck, German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK), partner site Hamburg/Kiel/Lübeck, Ratzeburger Allee 160, 23538, Lübeck, Germany.

Background: Pulmonary arterial embolism (PE) is not well characterized in elderly patients. In addition, unnecessary computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) examinations are often performed within this patient group, especially if the pretest probability is low.

Objective: To identify differences in clinical presentation in patients aged ≥80 years compared to patients <80 years and the effect of a BGA-optimized pretest probability to reduce unnecessary CTPAs according to age category.

Management of acute myocardial infarction in chronic kidney disease in Germany: an observational study.

BMC Nephrol

January 2025

Department of Internal Medicine II, Universitätsmedizin (Halle), Medical Faculty of the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg, Ernst-Grube-Straße 40, 06120, Halle (Saale), Germany.

Background: Managing acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) or end-stage renal disease on dialysis (renal replacement therapy, RRT) presents challenges due to elevated complication risks. Concerns about contrast-related kidney damage may lead to the omission of guideline-directed therapies like percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in this population.

Methods: We analysed German-DRG data of 2016 provided by the German Federal Bureau of Statistics (DESTATIS).

The gut microbiome is amenable to dietary interventions, and polyphenol-rich diets have been shown to enhance abundances of bacteria associated with short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production. We examined the effects of a strawberry-based intervention on the gut microbiome of 69 healthy elderly German adults. Participants in five groups consumed varying amounts of strawberries, freeze-dried strawberries, and capers in olive oil over 10 weeks as part of a randomized controlled trial.
