Background: The indication criteria for cochlear implantation differ considerably across regions.
Objectives: To estimate the effects of different candidacy criteria on the number of cochlear implant (CI) candidates.
Methods: We analysed a very large clinical audiological database comprising pure-tone thresholds and speech-audiometric data in order to identify CI candidates on the basis of different audiometric candidacy criteria. In particular, we simulated the effects of three different CI candidacy criteria.
Results: The bilateral evaluation of CI candidacy has the strongest influence on the number of potential CI candidates. Additionally, the cut-off criteria for middle-ear implants have a large effect on numbers of candidates when air conduction has deteriorated.Conclusions and Significance: Expanding the indication criteria opens up the possibility of improving the accurate identification of individual cases suitable for cochlear-implant provision.

Neural representations for visual stimuli typically emerge with a bilateral distribution across occipitotemporal cortex (OTC)? Pediatric patients undergoing unilateral OTC resection offer an opportunity to evaluate whether representations for visual stimulus individuation can sufficiently develop in a single OTC. Here, we assessed the non-resected hemisphere of patients with pediatric resection within ( = 9) and outside ( = 12) OTC, as well as healthy controls' two hemispheres ( = 21). Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we mapped category selectivity (CS), and representations for visual stimulus individuation (for faces, objects, and words) with repetition suppression (RS).

Both veins experienced significant compression - OLCIV proximally and ILCIV medially - due to the overlying right common iliac artery (RCIA) and lumbar spine. The patient presented with bilateral spider veins, lower extremity swelling, pelvic discomfort, and bilateral leg cramping.

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a potentially fatal condition with variable clinical presentations, ranging from classic respiratory symptoms to rare atypical manifestations. This report describes a 47-year-old woman who presented with acute, severe right upper quadrant abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting without respiratory complaints. Initial investigations, including abdominal ultrasound and contrast-enhanced CT of the abdomen, revealed no intra-abdominal abnormalities.
