Twist-controlled moiré superlattices (MSs) have emerged as a versatile platform for realizing artificial systems with complex electronic spectra. The combination of Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) can give rise to an interesting MS, which has recently featured a set of unexpected behaviors, such as unconventional ferroelectricity and the electronic ratchet effect. Yet, the understanding of the electronic properties of BLG/hBN MS has, at present, remained fairly limited. Here, we combine magneto-transport and low-energy sub-THz excitation to gain insights into the properties of this MS. We demonstrate that the alignment between BLG and hBN crystal lattices results in the emergence of compensated semimetals at some integer fillings of the moiré bands, separated by van Hove singularities where the Lifshitz transition occurs. A particularly pronounced semimetal develops when eight holes reside in the moiré unit cell, where coexisting high-mobility electron and hole systems feature strong magnetoresistance reaching 2350% already at = 0.25 T. Next, by measuring the THz-driven Nernst effect in remote bands, we observe valley splitting, indicating an orbital magnetization characterized by a strongly enhanced effective -factor of 340. Finally, using THz photoresistance measurements, we show that the high-temperature conductivity of the BLG/hBN MS is limited by electron-electron umklapp processes. Our multifaceted analysis introduces THz-driven magnetotransport as a convenient tool to probe the band structure and interaction effects in van der Waals materials and provides a comprehensive understanding of the BLG/hBN MS.

Charge-carrier compensation in topological semimetals amplifies the Nernst signal and simultaneously degrades the Seebeck coefficient. In this study, we report the simultaneous achievement of both a large Nernst signal and an unsaturating magneto-Seebeck coefficient in a topological nodal-line semimetal TaAs single crystal. The unique dual-high transverse and longitudinal thermopowers are attributed to multipocket synergy effects: the combination of a strong phonon-drag effect and the two overlapping highly dispersive conduction and valence bands with electron-hole compensation and high mobility, promising a large Nernst effect; the third Dirac band causes a large magneto-Seebeck effect.

Unusual violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law at ultralow temperatures in topological compensated semimetals.

Nat Commun

Thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity at ultralow temperatures and high magnetic fields are studied in the topological compensated semimetals TaAs, NbAs, and NdSb. A striking phenomenon is observed where the thermal conductivity shows a T scaling at very low temperatures, while the resistivity shows a T-independent residual term. This indicates a strong violation of the Wiedemann-Franz (WF) law, since the field dependence of κ shows that the low-temperature thermal conductivity is dominated by electronic transport.

Since the initial discovery of 2D van der Waals (vdW) materials, significant effort has been made to incorporate the three properties of magnetism, band structure topology, and strong electron correlations-to leverage emergent quantum phenomena and expand their potential applications. However, the discovery of a single vdW material that intrinsically hosts all three ingredients has remained an outstanding challenge. Here, the discovery of a Kondo-interacting topological antiferromagnet is reported in the vdW 5f electron system UOTe.

Endless Dirac nodal lines and high mobility in kagome semimetal NiInSe: a theoretical and experimental study.

Kagome-lattice crystal is crucial in quantum materials research, exhibiting unique transport properties due to its rich band structure and the presence of nodal lines and rings. Here, we investigate the electronic transport properties and perform first-principles calculations for NiInSekagome topological semimetal. First-principles calculations of the band structure without the inclusion of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) shows that three bands are crossing the Fermi level (), indicating the semi-metallic nature.

Semi-classical origin of the extreme magnetoresistance in PtSn.

Nat Commun

May 2024

Institute of Materials (IMX), École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland.

The so-called "extreme magnetoresistance" (XMR) found in few conductors poses interesting conceptual challenges which address needs in technology. In contrast to the more common XMR in semi-metals, PtSn stands out as a rare example of a high carrier density multi-band metal exhibiting XMR, sparking an active debate about its microscopic origin. Here we report a sharp sensitivity of its XMR upon the field angle, with an almost complete collapse only for one specific current and field direction (B//b, I//a).
