Background: Nutrient biomarkers (NBs) may serve as more accurate and precise indicators of dietary intake, particularly in older adults who often have subtle episodic memory recall and digestive/microbiome issues that alter the nutritional substrate readily available to the brain. NBs also allow insight into modes of action and metabolic changes that are actionable targets for modification through nutritional means in hopes of disease prevention and treatment. Prior to broad investment and deployment, the pre-analytical and intra-individual temporal variation over time should be documented to design and interpret clinical and epidemiological studies properly.

Background: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) place substantial burdens on care partners. The need to better support ADRD care partners through policy actions is high, specifically to enhance existing services and reduce inequities experienced by historically underserved communities.

Method: Between July and September 2023, a modified Delphi process was employed to determine policy and program priorities for supporting Oregon-based care partners.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Department of Neurology, Columbia University, New York, NY, USA.

Background: Structural determinants of health may be important drivers of late-life cognitive decline and dementia risk for women who have a disproportionate burden of Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study examines how early life exposure to structural sexism influences cognitive trajectories among women racialized as Black and White.

Method: This study analyzed longitudinal data from two cohort studies: the Washington Heights-Inwood Columbia Aging Project (WHICAP) and the Health and Retirement Study (HRS).

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Critical Path for Alzheimer's Disease (CPAD) Consortium, Critical Path institute, Tucson, AZ, USA.

Background: To help improve the Alzheimer's disease (AD) therapeutics research and development process, the Critical Path for Alzheimer's Disease (CPAD) Consortium at the Critical Path Institute (C-Path) provides a neutral framework for the drug development industry, regulatory agencies, academia, and patient advocacy organizations to collaborate. CPAD's extensive track record of developing regulatory-grade quantitative drug development tools motivates sponsors to share patient-level data and neuroimages from clinical trials. CPAD leverages these data and uses C-Path's core competencies in data management and standardization, quantitative modeling, and regulatory science to develop tools that help de-risk decision making in AD drug development.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic had a major impact on healthcare, contributing to a mass exodus of the workforce. This poses a concern for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) care, which benefits from consistent care routine and staff that know the resident. Therefore, it is important to understand nursing home staff perspectives on maintaining high staff morale, which impacts recruitment, retention, and care quality.
