The use of fibreoptic bronchoscopy with sterile catheter sampling of pulmonary secretions was evaluated in 70 patients with a provisional diagnosis of pneumonia. In 37 patients quantitative analysis of the sterile catheter isolates was performed (colony forming units (CFU) per ml). Potential bacterial pathogens were isolated in 37 patients and in the quantitative analysis, 14 of 22 isolates were grown in counts greater than or equal to 10(3) CFU/ml. Sterile catheter increased the bacterial isolation rate as in only 19 patients blood (2) or sputum (18) cultures yielded the same organisms. Sputum cultures showed a 25% false-positive rate in patients with no growth from sterile catheter. Quantitative analysis did not yield any further information in patients receiving antibiotics. Atypical or fungal pneumonia was diagnosed in 22 patients, while ten patients had other pathology simulating pneumonia. Sterile catheter sampling of pulmonary secretions at fibreoptic bronchoscopy proved to be a valuable tool in the diagnosis of bacterial pneumonia.

Conventional embolic agents focus on vessel occlusion but can cause unintended long-term inflammation and ischemia in healthy tissues. Next-generation embolic agents must exhibit biocompatibility, biodegradability, and effective drug delivery, yet some degradable microspheres degrade too quickly, leading to the potential migration of fragments into distal blood vessels causing off-target embolization.

Objective: To evaluate the uterine microbiome among women with endometrial polyps and submucosal fibroids and to compare results between endometrial sampling techniques.
Design: Patients with polyps or fibroids were prospectively recruited prior to hysteroscopy, while patients undergoing retrieval for planned oocyte cryopreservation were recruited prospectively as controls. Three specimen types obtained for each patient were the distal 5 mm of an embryo catheter passed to the uterine fundus (C), endometrial tissue from an endometrial biopsy (T), and formalin fixed paraffin embedded endometrial tissue from the same endometrial biopsy (FFPE).

Here, we present the first case of septic arthritis caused by and a literature review of invasive infections. The diagnosis was confirmed by the patient's clinical findings and microbiological examination of the joint fluid.

Aims: The aim of this study was to explore whether continuous infusion causing lubrication can effectively alleviate pain during male urethral catheterization.
Methods: This prospective, multicenter, double-blinded study included 190 male patients scheduled for urethral catheterization. Patients were randomly allocated into four groups: Group A: the catheter was lubricated with paraffin; Group B: the catheter was lubricated with compound lidocaine gel; Group C: the pump continuously infusing with sterilized water; Group D: the pump continuously infusing with 2% lidocaine.
