Cost-effectiveness of watchful waiting versus immediate emergency department transfer after epinephrine autoinjector use in Canada.

Allergy Asthma Clin Immunol

January 2025

Collaboration for Outcomes Research and Evaluation, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of British Columbia, 2405 Wesbrook Mall, Vancouver, BC, V6T 1Z3, Canada.

Background: Until recently, immediate emergency department (ED) transfer after food-related anaphylactic reactions was recommended regardless of symptom resolution following use of an epinephrine autoinjector (EAI). We evaluated the cost-effectiveness of delayed ED transfer after EAI use in non-medical settings (watchful waiting) compared to immediate ED transfer among pediatric patients with food allergies in Canada.

Methods: We developed a probabilistic Markov model of individuals starting at age of one year who are at risk of severe food-related allergic reactions requiring epinephrine.

Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) multimorbidity may need to be considered a specific disease because of distinct clinical and immunological differences from AR alone. Allergic multimorbidity often involves polysensitization, where allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) plays a significant role.

Objective: This study aims to explore differences in allergen IgE sensitization patterns between AR alone and AR multimorbidity.

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune hematological condition characterized by a markedly isolated decrease in platelets without any apparent associated clinical conditions, resulting in bleeding and bruising of the skin, mucous membranes, and major organs. It is often triggered by preceding illness or several immune stimulants such as immunizations, infections, allergic reactions, among others. While uncommon, arthropod bites can trigger acute ITP.

Novel pain management strategy for uterine fibroid embolization.

CVIR Endovasc

January 2025

Department of Medical Imaging, Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada.

Background: Uterine fibroid embolization can be associated with significant pain due to fibroid ischemia and interventions of the procedure itself. Fentanyl and midazolam are commonly provided for sedation and pain relief, but are not tolerated by all patients. This report outlines a novel pain management strategy for uterine fibroid embolization in a patient who could not receive either opioids or benzodiazepines.
