The Center for Nonlinear Studies (CNLS) was an integral part of my scientific career starting as a Postdoctoral Fellow in 1983 up to my tenure as CNLS Director from 2004 to 2015. As such, I experienced a number of scientific phases of CNLS through almost four decades of foundation, evolution, and transition. Throughout this entire interval, the inspiration and influence of David Campbell guided my way. A proper history of CNLS encompassing all of the many contributors to the CNLS story is beyond my means or purpose here. Instead, I present the history as I experienced it. I emphasize the main scientific accomplishments achieved at CNLS over more than 40 years, but I will also attempt to describe and quantify the attributes that made and continue to make the Center for Nonlinear Studies a special institution of remarkable impact and longevity. Throughout its existence, CNLS owes much to the enduring legacy of David Campbell who laid down the foundations and operating principles that have made it so successful.

Free-Space to SMF Integration and Green to C-Band Conversion Based on PPLN.

Sensors (Basel)

December 2024

Graduate School of Engineering Science, Osaka University, Toyonaka 560-8531, Osaka, Japan.

In this study, we experimentally demonstrate a PPLN-based free-space to SMF (single-mode fiber) conversion system capable of efficient long-wavelength down-conversion from 518 nm, optimized for minimal loss in highly turbid water, to 1540 nm, which is ideal for low-loss transmission in standard SMF. Leveraging the nonlinear optical properties of periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN), we achieve a wavelength conversion efficiency of 1.6% through difference frequency generation while maintaining a received optical signal-to-noise ratio of 10.

Inspection robots, which improve hazard identification and enhance safety management, play a vital role in the examination of high-risk environments in many fields, such as power distribution, petrochemical, and new energy battery factories. Currently, the position precision of the robots is a major barrier to their broad application. Exact kinematic model and control system of the robots is required to improve their location accuracy during movement on the unstructured surfaces.

Reactor-emitted electron antineutrinos can be detected via the inverse beta decay reaction, which produces a characteristic signal: a two-fold coincidence between a prompt positron event and a delayed neutron capture event within a specific time frame. While liquid scintillators are widely used for detecting neutrinos reacting with matter, detection is difficult because of the low interaction of neutrinos. In particular, it is important to distinguish between neutron (n) and gamma (γ) signals.

Multiband (MB) optical transmission targets increasing the capacity of operators' optical transport networks. However, nonlinear impairments (NLI) affect each optical channel in the C+L+S bands differently, and, therefore, the routing and spectrum assignment (RSA) problem needs to be complemented with fast and accurate tools to consider the quality of transmission (QoT) within the provisioning process. This paper proposes a digital twin-assisted approach for lightpath provisioning to provide a complete solution for the RSA problem that ensures the required QoT in MB optical networks.

Vedolizumab (VDZ) is approved in the treatment of patients with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis (UC) or Crohn's disease (CD). VDZ exhibits considerable variability in its pharmacokinetic (PK) profile, and its exposure-response relationship is not yet fully understood. The aim was to investigate the variability in VDZ trough levels and PK parameters, to assess the relationship between VDZ PK and biochemical response, as well as clinical and endoscopic outcomes.
