24-Masticadienonic acid (MNA) and 24-isomasticadienonic acid (IMNA) are the major triterpenic acids in Chios Mastic Gum (CMG), a resin derived from var. . Despite their promising pharmacological potential, limited information is available due to the complexity of isolating them in pure form.

Airborne microplastic pollution detected in the atmosphere of the South Shetland Islands in Antarctica.

Chemosphere

November 2024

Instituto Antártico Argentino (IAA/DNA), 25 de Mayo N° 1143, San Martín (1650), Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Plastic pollution has emerged as a growing environmental concern, affecting even the most remote regions of the planet as the Antarctic continent, endangering its ecosystem and contributing to climate change. In this context, a continuous atmospheric microplastics monitoring study was conducted at Carlini Argentine Antarctic Station located in the southwest of 25 de Mayo (King George) Island (South Shetlands). Passive samplers were installed at three locations throughout the station, chosen based on the intensity of human activity and proved to be effective in collecting atmospheric particles over a one-year study period.

Article Synopsis
  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus is becoming a major global health issue, expected to nearly double in prevalence from 194 million in 2003 to 333 million by 2025, with 90%-95% of cases being type 2.
  • New research focuses on developing dual inhibitors for type 2 diabetes through synthesizing ester and triazole derivatives of p-coumaric acid, using methods like Williamson synthesis and Microwave-assisted click reaction.
  • These synthesized compounds were tested and showed effective inhibition against two key enzymes, GSK-3β kinase and DPP-IV, indicating that p-coumaric acid derivatives are promising candidates for new diabetes treatments.

Introduction: Omacetaxine, a semisynthetic form of Homoharringtonine (HHT), was approved for the treatment of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML). Previously, we have published the synthesis of this natural alkaloid and three of its derivatives: Deoxyharringtonine (DHT), Deoxyhomoharringtonine (DHHT), and Bis(demethyl)-deoxyharringtonine (BDHT), and reported its refractory activity against the HL-60/RV+ cells over-expressing P-glycoprotein 1 (MDR1).

Methods: In this study, we have explored the extent of this resistance by first expanding the panel of established cell lines and using a panel of 21 leukemia patient-derived primary cells.

Critical analysis of analytical techniques developed for statins in biological fluids, environmental and fermentation samples.

Crit Rev Biotechnol

October 2024

NUS Centre for Cancer Research, Department of Pharmacology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, Singapore.

Statins are the most prescribed drug for regulating the high cholesterol level in the blood, which can lead to severe complications, such as cardiovascular diseases and other health complications. A wide range of analytical techniques have been employed for the quantification of statins from various origins, including fermentation derived (lovastatin, pravastatin, and compactin), semi-synthetic (simvastatin), and synthetic (atorvastatin, rosuvastatin, and fluvastatin) routes. The presence of more than one structural form and structural analogue generated in the biosynthesis pathway, as well as reaction intermediates and macromolecules in the clinical sample, complicates the quantification of statins.
