The effect of the U-shaped cavity of conformationally flexible chiral Lewis acidic boron-based catalysts in multiselective Diels-Alder reactions was investigated. The U-shaped catalysts can recognize substituents at the terminal acetylene moiety of propynal based on steric factors and can also recognize alkyne and alkene substrates based on the match/mismatch between the catalysts and substrates. Moreover, even in a mixture of different catalysts and substrates, the desired competitive reactions can proceed multiselectively. This proof-of-concept study should contribute to the development of artificial enzyme-like catalysis in vitro.

Investigation of the interaction mechanism of citrus pectin-polyphenol-protein complex.

Food Chem

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Food Science and Resources, Nanchang University, Nanchang 330047, China. Electronic address:

Citrus pectin is an anionic polysaccharide in citrus, which may improve the stability of citrus juices. This study investigated the influence of citrus pectin on the stability of protein-polyphenol complexes in the citrus juice model system and its interaction mechanism by multispectral and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that the citrus pectin-proanthocyanidin-zein complex improved the model citrus juices' cloud and thermal stability.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how natural convection behaves in a hybrid nanofluid (AlO-Cu-water) within an inverse U-shaped cavity, influenced by an external magnetic field and including porous media effects for realism in industrial applications.
  • The cavity features partially heated upper walls and wavy cooling walls, and the research employs a FORTRAN code with a finite difference method to solve the governing equations, confirming model accuracy through comparisons with prior studies.
  • Results show significant changes in the Nusselt number (N) based on various parameters, including increases with the amplitude, heater location, thermal radiation, and wavelength, while also revealing that some factors like heat source length and magnetic field strength lead to decreases in N.

Objectives: Investigate the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) at various body sites and dental caries.

Materials And Methods: Based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 2011 to 2016, the correlation between BMD at various body sites and the DMFS index among 7044 adults aged 20-59 years was analyzed. Multiple linear regression, restricted cubic splines (RCS), piecewise linear regression, logistic regression, weighted quantile sum regression (WQS) and mediation effects analysis were integrated to explore the relationship between BMD and dental caries.

Flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), serving as a light-absorbing coenzyme factor, can undergo conformationally isomeric complexation within different enzymes to form various enzyme-coenzyme complexes, which exhibit photocatalytic functions that play a crucial role in physiological processes. Constructing an artificial photofunctional system using FAD or its derivatives can not only develop biocompatible photocatalytic systems with excellent activities but also further enhance our understanding of the role of FAD in biological systems. Here, we demonstrate a supramolecular approach for constructing an artificial enzyme-coenzyme-type host-guest complex with photoinduced catalytic function in water.

Micro-Computed Tomographic Analysis of Radicular Dentin Thickness in Mandibular Second Molars Across Diverse Anatomic Root Variations: Identifying Potential Danger Zones.

J Endod

November 2024

State Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases, National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, Department of Cariology and Endodontics, West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China. Electronic address:

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate radicular dentin thicknesses in mandibular second molars (MSMs), considering variations in root configuration and the morphology of the pulp chamber floor (PCF). The types of radicular grooves and potential danger zones were also identified.

Methods: A total of 149 MSMs were scanned with micro-computed tomographic imaging and classified into 4 groups according to root fusion and PCF morphology as follows: (1) 45 with fused roots and C-shaped PCFs, (2) 45 with fused roots and non-C-shaped PCFs, (3) 14 with a single canal, and (4) 45 with separated roots.
