. The syndrome of tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis (TINU) is a rare oculorenal condition, mainly seen in children and women. The underlying cause of this disease is unknown. . We report a 24-year-old male without any past medical history, diagnosed with bilateral uveitis and azotemia. Biopsy revealed tubulointerstitial nephritis, consistent with TINU syndrome. Fluorescein angiogram revealed peripheral retinal vasculitis. . TINU is a rare disorder that needs to be distinguished from sarcoidosis, Sjogren's disease, and tuberculosis. Treatment is indicated in patients with progressive renal insufficiency, consisting of steroid therapy. Most patients recover kidney function. Its early recognition is important to offer the best chance of organ preservation.

Objective: A comprehensive bioinformatics analysis was conducted to investigate potential new diagnostic biomarkers and immune infiltration characteristics associated with tubulointerstitial injury in lupus nephritis (LN), and to examine possible correlations between key genes and infiltrating immune cells.

Methods: The GSE32591, GSE113342, and GSE200306 datasets were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in the pooled dataset. Support vector machine-recursive feature elimination analysis and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression model were used to screen for possible markers, and the compositional patterns of the 22 types of immune cell fractions in LN were determined using CIBERSORT.

Acute Kidney Injury Following the Ingestion of a Medicinal Plants' Mixture: A Case Report.

Case Rep Nephrol

December 2024

Department of Nephrology, CHU Bab El-Oued Hopital Mohamed Lamine Debaghine, Algiers, Algeria.

Acute renal failure secondary to medicinal plants is common in countries where the use of traditional phytotherapy is preponderant. Although the nephrotoxic potentials of some herbal preparations have been well characterized, the use of many medicinal plants is still considered largely safe, often relying on weak evidence. Here, we report the case of a 17-year-old patient with severe acute renal failure, associated to an esophagitis with erosive gastritis as well as an inflammatory anemia, with no obvious etiology.

Multi-stain deep learning prediction model of treatment response in lupus nephritis based on renal histopathology.

Kidney Int

December 2024

Department of Pediatrics, The First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. Electronic address:

The response of the kidney after induction treatment is one of the determinants of prognosis in lupus nephritis, but effective predictive tools are lacking. Here, we sought to apply deep learning approaches on kidney biopsies for treatment response prediction in lupus nephritis. Patients who received cyclophosphamide or mycophenolate mofetil as induction treatment were included and the primary outcome was 12-month treatment response, complete response defined as 24h urinary protein under 0.

Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology: A Global Health Threat in Rural Agricultural Communities-Prevalence, Suspected Causes, Mechanisms, and Prevention Strategies.

Pathophysiology

December 2024

Laboratory of Epidemiology and Research in Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah University, PO 1893, Km 2200, Route Sidi Harazem, Fez 30000, Morocco.

Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology (CKDu) is a worldwide hidden health threat that is associated with progressive loss of kidney functions without showing any initial symptoms until reaching end-stage renal failure, eventually leading to death. It is a growing health problem in Asia, Central America, Africa, and the Middle East, with identified hotspots. CKDu disease mainly affects young men in rural farming communities, while its etiology is not related to hypertension, kidney stones, diabetes, or other known causes.
