Dust is a sink for many semi-volatile compounds including flame retardants of the organophosphate ester (OPE) and brominated flame-retardant (BFR) classes. Given the large amount of time that we spend indoors, our exposure to these compounds via dust is of significant interest. Here, we present a novel microextraction approach to determine quantitative levels of selected OPEs and BFRs sampled from residential air filters from HVAC systems using a small volume of solvent. Dust samples (25 mg) is extracted with 1 mL of hexane/acetone (50/50, v/v). Upon solvent extraction of these HVAC dust samples, the analytes (TCPP, TDCPP, TPHP, T24DtBPP, TBBPA, and TriBBPA) were quantified via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) or liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS). The methods for extracting these compounds from HVAC dust samples are detailed here with extensive method validation data to demonstrate accuracy and precision of these methods. •Dust is a sink for many semi-volatile compounds, including novel or emerging indoor pollutants like the organophosphate ester flame retardant T24DtBPP.•Here, a small amount of dust (25 mg) is extracted with a small volume of solvent (1 mL hexane and acetone) prior to analysis via chromatographic separation and mass spectrometric detection.

In 2018, the State Council issued the Three-year Action Plan for Winning the Blue Sky Defense War (Blue Sky Defense War). To study the characteristics and sources of PM pollution in the early stage (first stage), middle stage (second stage), and late stage (third stage) of the Blue Sky Defense War in Handan City in autumn and winter, PM samples were collected in the autumn and winter from 2016 to 2021. Based on the concentration data of eight water-soluble ions, EC, and OC the source analysis was performed using the positive definite matrix factorization model, backward trajectory, and potential source contribution factor (PSCF) analysis.

Electronic waste (e-waste) dismantling and dumpsite processes are recognized as significant sources of chlorinated paraffin (CP) exposure. This study aims to investigate the environmental occurrence and distribution of polychlorinated alkanes (PCAs-C), specifically in soil and outdoor dust samples collected from e-waste dumpsites and automobile dismantling and resale sites in Nigeria. The results revealed a widespread occurrence of PCAs across all sampled locations.

Utilization of loose waste biomass such as charcoal dust remains popular in low-to mid-income countries due to increased energy demands, poverty and heighten efforts to mitigate climate change. This study sought to investigate the effects of starch, paper and algae binders on the physical, mechanical and combustion characteristics and emission levels of manually-made acacia charcoal dust briquettes. Acacia charcoal dust is collected and mixed with different binders at binder proportions of 10 %, 15 %, 20 %, 25 % and 30 % of the total weight for individual samples.

Background: Using primary airway epithelial cells (AEC) is essential to mimic more closely different types and stages of lung disease in humans while reducing or even replacing animal experiments. Access to lung tissue remains limited because these samples are generally obtained from patients who undergo lung transplantation for end-stage lung disease or thoracic surgery for (mostly) lung cancer. We investigated whether forceps or cryo biopsies are a viable alternative source of AEC compared to the conventional technique.

Background: Bird fancier's disease is a type of HP occurring due to exposure to bird's antigen. The diagnosis is quite difficult as it requires the identification of an inciting agent with findings of HRCT and lung biopsy. The exposure is usually done by history with antigen-specific IgG and/or specific inhalational challenge testing.
