Pericardiocentesis is an important diagnostic and therapeutic procedure. In the setting of cardiac tamponade, pericardiocentesis can rapidly improve hemodynamics, and in cases of diagnostic uncertainty, pericardiocentesis allows for fluid analysis to aid in diagnosis. In contemporary practice, the widespread availability of ultrasonography has made echocardiographic guidance the standard of care. Additional tools such as micropuncture technique, live ultrasonographic guidance, and adjunctive tools including fluoroscopy continue to advance and enhance procedural efficiency and safety. When performed by experienced operators, pericardiocentesis is a safe, effective, and potentially life-saving procedure.

Background: Delayed lead perforation is a rare complication of cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED). Clinical presentations range from completely asymptomatic to pericardial tamponade. Surgical lead extraction is recommended and transvenous lead extraction (TLE) with surgical backup is an alternative method.

Introduction: Pericardial effusion (PE) is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the pericardial space, which, if severe, is associated with high mortality. The causes are diverse, including infective and non-infective. Few studies have looked at the spectrum of severity and causes in Northern Nigeria.

The benefits of permanent cardiac pacing have been widely demonstrated. However, the literature on complications remains inconsistent. We lack precise information about the frequency of complications and their predictive factors in our center.

Trauma to the ascending aorta may progress to a cardiac tamponade, which is often life-threatening. Here, we report on a case of traumatic dissection of the ascending aorta, complicated by multiple injuries. A 24-hour follow-up period was provided to evaluate the traumatic bleeding, and a large tear that extended over three-quarters of the circumference of the aortic intima was identified.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, and pericardial effusion is relatively common in these patients. What constitutes the best therapeutic method for treating pericardial effusion in patients with cancer is controversial. Recent decades have witnessed the introduction of percutaneous balloon pericardiotomy, an effective and less-invasive method with lower recurrence rates than pericardiocentesis for draining pericardial effusion in patients with cancer who have a poor prognosis.
