What time does a clock tell after quantum tunneling? Predictions and indirect measurements range from superluminal or instantaneous tunneling to finite durations, depending on the specific experiment and the precise definition of the elapsed time. Proposals and implementations use the atomic motion to define this delay, although the inherent quantum nature of atoms implies a delocalization and is in sharp contrast to classical trajectories. Here, we rely on an operational approach: We prepare atoms in a coherent superposition of internal states and study the time read-off via a Ramsey sequence after the tunneling process without the notion of classical trajectories or velocities. Our operational framework (i) unifies definitions of tunneling delay within one approach, (ii) connects the time to a frequency standard given by a conventional atomic clock that can be boosted by differential light shifts, and (iii) highlights that there exists no superluminal or instantaneous tunneling.

Observations of Bell Inequality Violations with Causal Isolation between Source and Detectors.

We report the experimental observations of Bell inequality violations (BIV) in entangled photons causally separated by a rotating mirror. A Foucault mirror gating geometry is used to causally isolate the entangled photon source and detectors. We report an observed BIV of CHSH-S=2.

Three-dimensional (3-D) light solitons in space-time, referred to as light bullets, have many novel properties and wide applications. Here we theoretically show how the combination of diffraction-free beam and ultrashort pulse spatiotemporal-coupling enables the creation of a straight-line propagation light bullet with freely tunable velocity and acceleration. This light bullet could propagate with a constant superluminal or subluminal velocity, and it could also counter-propagate with a very fast superluminal velocity (e.

Poynting's theorem and luminal total energy transport in passive dielectric media.

Without approximation the energy density in Poynting's theorem for the generally dispersive and passive dielectric medium is demonstrated to be a system total dynamical energy density. Thus the density in Poynting's theorem is a conserved form that by virtue of its positive definiteness prescribes important qualitative and quantitative features of the medium-field dynamics by rendering the system dynamically closed. This fully three-dimensional result, applicable to anisotropic and inhomogeneous media, is model independent, relying solely on the complex-analytic consequences of causality and passivity.

Role of the instantaneous spectrum on pulse propagation in causal linear dielectrics.

A model-independent theorem demonstrates how a causal linear dielectric medium responds to the instantaneous spectrum, that is, the spectrum of the electric field pulse that is truncated at each new instant (as a given locale in the medium experiences the pulse). This process leads the medium to exchange energy with the front of a pulse differently than with the back as the instantaneous spectrum laps onto or off of nearby resonances. So-called superluminal pulse propagation in either absorbing or amplifying media as well as highly subluminal pulse propagation are understood qualitatively and quantitatively within this context.
