Objectives: The medical diagnosis of a disease is common in older age and can carry significant financial costs. For many older adults, equity in a home is their primary component of wealth; however, housing wealth is illiquid. We analyze the relationship between the liquidation of housing wealth through mortgage borrowing on older homeowners' ability to successfully control a disease.

Methods: We use data on homeowners aged 65 and older from the 1998-2016 waves of the Health and Retirement Study (N = 3,457). We use biomarkers and physical health indicators to measure disease control following a medical diagnosis of diabetes, heart condition, high blood pressure, lung disease, or cancer. Random effects linear probability and instrumental variable regressions estimate the associations of housing wealth, new mortgage borrowing, and disease control.

Results: Descriptively, 28% of older homeowners who borrow against home equity are not controlled on their disease, compared to 33% of non-borrowers. Panel data instrumental variable regressions show that each $10,000 borrowed from home equity after diagnosis is associated with a 17-percentage-point reduction in the probability of the disease not being controlled.

Discussion: Many older adults are not able or willing to liquidate housing wealth, and the ability to borrow also depends on changes in home values. Thus, housing wealth is not a uniform social determinant of health but is shaped by older adults' participation in financial markets.

Background And Objective: Utilizing AI to mine tumor microenvironment information in whole slide images (WSIs) for glioma molecular subtype and prognosis prediction is significant for treatment. Existing weakly-supervised learning frameworks based on multi-instance learning have potential in WSIs analysis, but the large number of patches from WSIs challenges the effective extraction of key local patch and neighboring patch microenvironment info. Therefore, this paper aims to develop an automatic neural network that effectively extracts tumor microenvironment information from WSIs to predict molecular typing and prognosis of glioma.

Department of Sociology, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, United States of America.

Research over the past two decades has noted significant racial/ethnic wealth inequalities-inequalities with important implications for life chances and institutional access. Home ownership is as a foundational element of such inequality with broad consequences for exposure to crime, quality of public safety services, and access to healthcare, education, and employment. Building on earlier scholarship that has tended to focus on specific forms of mortgages, we draw in this article on over 1.

The role of health shocks after age 70 on housing and wealth profiles.

We conduct a novel investigation into the effects of uncertain health shocks and medical costs on the life cycle consumption, housing, and saving decisions. Our model aids in understanding the role of health shocks and medical costs after age 70 in explaining the lack of wealth and housing decumulation during retirement. We utilize a comprehensive life-cycle model that includes housing, as well as shocks to house price, labor income, and health.

Background: Under-5 children have been known to bear a significant burden of malaria in endemic countries. Though significant progress has been made towards malaria prevention and control in Nigeria, it is expected that the addition of new malaria prevention strategy, such as perennial malaria chemoprevention (PMC) can contribute to a more rapid decline in malaria cases. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with malaria and anaemia among children aged 2-18 months in Osun State.

Background: The National Institute of Health and Social Care (NIHR) Research Champion (RC) role, has grown over the last few years. This public contributor role was designed to engage and involve patients and the public in health and care research within the NHS. Yet, there has been little focus on how it is working and experienced.
