AI Article Synopsis

  • Research Capacity Strengthening (RCS) enhances the ability of individuals and organizations to identify issues, develop solutions, and apply knowledge effectively, particularly in the context of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
  • Despite its importance, strategies for incorporating RCS into multi-country SRHR studies remain underexplored, prompting a need for clearer guidelines.
  • The study provides a comprehensive framework along with seven actionable steps for research teams and funders to effectively implement embedded RCS in low- and middle-income countries, supported by a practical checklist for planning and evaluation.

Article Abstract

Research capacity strengthening (RCS) can empower individuals, institutions, networks, or countries to define and prioritize problems systematically; develop and scientifically evaluate appropriate solutions; and reinforce or improve capacities to translate knowledge into policy and practice. However, how to embed RCS into multi-country studies focusing on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) is largely undocumented. We used findings from a qualitative study, from a review of the literature, and from a validation exercise from a panel of experts from research institutions that work on SRHR RCS. We provide a framework for embedded RCS; suggest a set of seven concrete actions that research project planners, designers, implementers, and funders can utilise to guide embedded RCS activities in low- and middle-income countries; and present a practical checklist for planning and assessing embedded RCS in research projects.

Absorptive frequency-selective transmission/reflection (AFST/AFSR) metamaterials (MMs) embedded with yttrium-iron-garnet are proposed, capable of achieving angular-insensitive and switchable octave absorption. The season optimization algorithm is utilized to optimize the structural parameters of the MM, thus achieving exceptional angular stability. By adjusting the discrete decreasing magnetic field applied to the MM, it can freely switch between double, triple, quadruple, and fivefold octave absorptions.

Photosynthetic biohybrid systems for solar fuels catalysis.

Chem Commun (Camb)

September 2024

Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division, Argonne National Laboratory, Lemont, IL 60439, USA.

Photosynthetic reaction center (RC) proteins are finely tuned molecular systems optimized for solar energy conversion. RCs effectively capture and convert sunlight with near unity quantum efficiency utilizing light-induced directional electron transfer through a series of molecular cofactors embedded within the protein core to generate a long-lived charge separated state with a useable electrochemical potential. Of current interest are new strategies that couple RC chemistry to the direct synthesis of energy-rich compounds.

Methods for evaluating unsupervised vector representations of genomic regions.

NAR Genom Bioinform

September 2024

Department of Genome Sciences, School of Medicine, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA 22908, USA.

Representation learning models have become a mainstay of modern genomics. These models are trained to yield vector representations, or embeddings, of various biological entities, such as cells, genes, individuals, or genomic regions. Recent applications of unsupervised embedding approaches have been shown to learn relationships among genomic regions that define functional elements in a genome.

Surgically targeted radiation therapy versus stereotactic radiation therapy: A dosimetric comparison for brain metastasis resection cavities.

Brachytherapy

November 2024

Department of Radiation Oncology, Miami Cancer Institute, Baptist Health South Florida, Miami, FL; Department of Radiation Oncology, Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, Florida International University, Miami, FL. Electronic address:

Purpose: Surgically targeted radiation therapy (STaRT) with Cesium-131 seeds embedded in a collagen tile is a promising treatment for recurrent brain metastasis. In this study, the biological effective doses (BED) for normal and target tissues from STaRT plans were compared with those of external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) modalities.

Methods: Nine patients (n = 9) with 12 resection cavities (RCs) who underwent STaRT (cumulative physical dose of 60 Gy to a depth of 5 mm from the RC edge) were replanned with CyberKnife (CK), Gamma Knife (GK), and intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) using an SRT approach (30 Gy in 5 fractions).
