A two-step protocol for the conversion of alkyl-substituted alkynes to 1,3-enynes is reported. In this α-methenylation process, an iron-catalyzed propargylic C-H functionalization delivers tetramethylpiperidine-derived homopropargylic amines which undergo facile Cope elimination upon N-oxidation to afford the enyne products. A range of aryl alkyl and dialkyl acetylenes were found to be suitable substrates for this process, which constitutes an alkyne analogue for the Eschenmoser methenylation of carbonyl derivatives. In addition, a new bench-stable precatalyst for iron-catalyzed propargylic C-H functionalization is reported.

The iron-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of secondary propargyl electrophiles with lithium organoborates has been established. A propyl-bridged bulky bisphosphine ligand, SciPROP-TB, cooperated with the bulky TIPS substituent at the alkyne terminal position to achieve the cross-coupling reaction with exclusive propargylic selectivity. The reaction features high functional group compatibility, regioselectivity, and yield with a broad substrate scope.

A visible-light-induced iron-catalyzed α-alkylation of ketones with allylic and propargylic alcohols as pro-electrophiles is reported. The diaminocyclopentadienone iron tricarbonyl complex plays a dual role by harvesting light and facilitating dehydrogenation and reduction steps without the help of any exogenous photosensitizer. γ,δ-Unsaturated ketones can now be accessed through this borrowing hydrogen methodology at room temperature.

A novel iron-catalyzed borylation of propargylic acetates leading to allenylboronates has been developed. The method allows the preparation of a variety of di-, tri- and tetrasubstituted allenylboronates at room temperature with good functional group compatibility. Stereochemical studies show that an anti-S 2' displacement of acetate by boron occurs; this also allows transfer of chirality to yield enantiomerically enriched allenylboronates.
