This article explores the feminist social critique in the 'big heroine' drama, a newly emerged genre of television that focuses on empowering yet dramatic stories of urban women in contemporary China. The article theorises the genre as a site of ongoing contestations to inform and critique women's maternal reality in neoliberal, pronatalist China. The big heroine genre is situated in the postsocialist structure of feeling defined by alienation and precarity, responding to China's need to stabilise the emerging population crisis and labour shortage. Using a popular instance within the genre, (2022), as a case study, the article argues that the show validates the legitimacy of women's anxieties and challenges in maternity and then invites viewers to engage in a multifaceted analysis of the intricate web of structural injustices women experience in pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum and having a second child. By doing so, it not only resonates with viewers' yearning for recognition and empathy but also stimulates a broader discourse on new and persisting maternal challenges in pronatalist China. I conclude that the genre's contradictory and contingent nature mirrors the complexities of the Chinese party-state's attempt to navigate the ideological instability surrounding maternity and motherhood. The genre is progressive in its alternative imagination of kinship and care networks for women navigating the moral, medical, and cultural dilemmas of the maternal body and motherhood in the moment of the state's transitioning into a more aggressive form of pronatalism.

Objective: The opioid crisis in the United States continues essentially unabated, fueled by fentanyl contamination of the heroin supply and resulting in 79,770 reported opioid-involved overdose deaths in the calendar year 2022. To prevent another such crisis emerging, it is necessary to fully identify its root causes.

Methods: Despite the well-recognized role the pharmaceutical industry played in facilitating the crisis via the aggressive marketing of prescription opioids, several other less appreciated but perhaps more influential factors were also contributors, and the overall goal of this review is to ensure that these are not be lost to history in a concerted effort to blame opioid manufacturers and distributors.

This essay explores the character of Cerulia in Frances Burney's dramatic play, , composed and revised in the 1790s, yet never published or staged in Burney's lifetime. Cerulia seems to eschew any easy dramatic categorization, as she cannot be identified with the heroine of the play. Undeniably, she is a victim, but of whom/what, we may wonder? Does attempting to define the nature of the of which Cerulia remains victim lead the "ideal" reader/viewer toward either fate/the gods or, rather, social apparatuses? And, finally, what about the eponymous protagonist Hubert de Vere? Is it correct to identify de Vere as the actant "hero", or perhaps as per the sub-category "villain hero" so popular in late eighteenth-century dramas? Burney's adroit exploitation of tropology and literary allusion in will be at the centre of this essay.

Background: Globally, the US-Mexico Border is one of the largest drug trafficking regions, with Ciudad Juarez (CJ) and El Paso (EP) making up the second-largest border crossing in the world. Border communities are places where the risk of drug use harm and infectious diseases such as HIV are augmented due to the confluence of factors operating across the physical, social, economic and policy environment. Background: Administering premixed drugs in commodity packets was first reported in Asia in 2015, but there continues to be a dearth of related population-based data. This study aimed at examining (1) the prevalence of drug-packet use in the population and (2) the sociodemographic profiles, particularly gender distribution, of drug-packet users.
