In earlier quantum chemical calculations of isotope effects, chemical species in the liquid phase were generally treated as existing in the gas phase. In recent years, however, advances in computational programs have made it easier for the self-consistent reaction field (SCRF) method to handle chemical species in the liquid phase, and as a result, it has become easier to apply the SCRF method to isotope effect calculations. This paper concerns the scope of application of the DFT-SCRF method to reversible processes for hydrogen isotope enrichment. It is found that the applicability of the method depends on the type of the intermolecular interaction in the liquid phase and the degree of hydrogen isotope effect (separation factor) on which the process is based. When the magnitude of the isotope effect of the separation system is greater than 10, the simple SCRF method is fully applicable; when the magnitude is around 10, SCRF with a dimer model, in which the monomer is replaced by a dimer, is applicable for the analysis of the liquid phase with relatively strong intermolecular interactions. Anharmonic correction to the separation factor calculated based on harmonic frequencies may be effective to systems with the liquid phase with weak intermolecular interactions.

The theoretical study of instabilities, thermal fluctuations, and topological defects in the crystal-rotator-I-rotator-II (X-R-R) phase transitions of -alkanes has been conducted. First, we examine the nature of the R-R phase transition in nanoconfined alkanes. We propose that under confined conditions, the presence of quenched random orientational disorder makes the R phase unstable.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate microbiome and microbiota-derived C18 dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), such as conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), and to investigate their differences that correlate with arthritis severity in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mice.

Methods: On day 84 after induction, during the chronic phase of arthritis, cecal samples were analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing, and plasma and cecal digesta were evaluated using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Differences in microbial composition between 10 control (Ctrl) and 29 CIA mice or between the mild and severe subgroups based on arthritis scores were identified.

Background: The differential diagnosis between benign and malignant thyroid nodules continues to be a major challenge in clinical practice. The rising incidence of thyroid neoplasm and the low incidence of aggressive thyroid carcinoma, urges the exploration of strategies to improve the diagnostic accuracy in a pre-surgical phase, particularly for indeterminate nodules, and to prevent unnecessary surgeries. Only in 2022, the 5th WHO Classification of Endocrine and Neuroendocrine Tumors, and in 2023, the 3rd Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology and the European Thyroid Association included biomarkers in their guidelines.

Surfactant-free W/O high internal phase emulsions co-stabilized by beeswax and phytosterol crystal scaffold: A promising fat mimetic with enhanced mechanical and mouthfeel properties.

Water-in-oil high internal phase emulsions (W/O-HIPEs) typically rely on large amounts of surfactants to disperse water droplets and usually use crystalline saturated triacylglycerides (TAGs) to enhance processing properties. However, these practices conflict with consumer demands for 'natural' ingredients. This study seeks to develop novel crystal fractions similar to saturated TAGs for the preparation of W/O-HIPEs as low-calorie fat mimetics, focusing on their mechanical and mouthfeel properties, which have received little attention thus far.

Background: Furfurals, key derivatives of Maillard reactions commonly found in everyday foods, have been identified as having significant toxic effects on human health. Excessive intake of furfurals can lead symptoms such as weight loss, poor nutrient metabolism which followed by disease occurrence. The severe carcinogenicity, mutagenicity and genotoxicity of furfurals were well recognized recently.
