Background: Ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) is a common congenital urinary tract disorder in children. It can be diagnosed as early as due to the presence of hydronephrosis or later in life due to symptomatic occurrence.

Aim: To evaluate the discrepancy between dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance urography (dMRU) and scintigraphy 99m-technetium mercaptoacetyltriglycine (MAG-3) for the functional evaluation of UPJO.

Methods: Between 2016 and 2020, 126 patients with UPJO underwent surgery at Robert Debré Hospital. Of these, 83 received a prenatal diagnosis, and 43 were diagnosed during childhood. Four of the 126 patients underwent surgery based on the clinical situation and postnatal ultrasound findings without undergoing functional imaging evaluation. Split renal function was evaluated preoperatively using scintigraphy MAG-3 ( = 28), dMRU ( = 53), or both ( = 40). In this study, we included patients who underwent surgery for UPJO and scintigraphy MAG-3 + dMRU but excluded those who underwent only scintigraphy MAG-3 or dMRU. The patients were divided into groups A (< 10% discrepancy) and B (> 10% discrepancy). We examined the discrepancy in split renal function between the two modalities and investigated the possible risk factors.

Results: The split renal function between the two kidneys was compared in 40 patients (28 boys and 12 girls) using scintigraphy MAG-3 and dMRU. Differential renal function, as determined using both modalities, showed a difference of < 10% in 31 children and > 10% in 9 children. Calculation of the relative renal function using dMRU revealed an excellent correlation coefficient with renal scintigraphy MAG-3 for both kidneys.

Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that dMRU is equivalent to scintigraphy MAG-3 for evaluating split renal function in patients with UPJO.

Naringenin has the potential to regulate ferroptosis and mitigate renal damage in diabetic nephropathy (DN). However, it remains unclear whether the naringenin's effects in DN are linked to its ability to regulate ferroptosis. This study investigated the potential anti-ferroptosis properties of naringenin in high glucose (HG)-induced renal tubular epithelial cell models.

Prevalence of chronic kidney disease and anemia in Hirakud Command Area, Odisha, India: unveiling the role of environmental toxicants.

J Nephrol

January 2025

Laboratory of Renal Toxicopathology & Medicine, P.G. Department of Environmental Sciences, Sambalpur University, Burla, Odisha, 768019, India.

Background: The present community-based study assessed the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD)/chronic kidney disease of unknown origin (CKDu) as well as anemia in some intense agricultural zones under Hirakud Command Area and evaluated their association with pesticides and heavy metal exposure.

Methods: Random cluster sampling method was used to assess the prevalence of CKD and anemia. Hematological analysis was carried out using autoanalyzer.

Background: Depression and anxiety are commonly experienced by people with chronic kidney disease (CKD). This study aimed to evaluate person- and service-level factors associated with depression and anxiety symptoms. We sought to also understand utilisation of mental health treatments and preferences for future psychological support.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is often complicated by diabetes, impacting various biochemical and immunological markers. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between irisin, apelin-13, and immunological markers IL-1α and IL-1β in diabetic patients with CKD. This cross-sectional study was conducted from January to June 2023 in a tertiary care hospital in Tikrit City, Iraq.

Renal fibrosis (RF) is a crucial pathological factor in the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) to end-stage renal failure, and accurate and noninvasive assays to monitor the progression of renal fibrosis are needed. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are noncoding RNAs that can be used as diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for human diseases. In this study, we analysed the expression of hsa_circ_0008925 in human urinary renal tubular cells and investigated its role in renal fibrosis.
