Heterogeneous risk attitudes and waves of infection.

Many countries have experienced multiple waves of infection during the COVID-19 pandemic. We propose a novel but parsimonious extension of the SIR model, a CSIR model, that can endogenously generate waves. In the model, cautious individuals take appropriate prevention measures against the virus and are not exposed to infection risk. Incautious individuals do not take any measures and are susceptible to the risk of infection. Depending on the size of incautious and susceptible population, some cautious people lower their guard and become incautious-thus susceptible to the virus. When the virus spreads sufficiently, the population reaches "temporary" herd immunity and infection subsides thereafter. Yet, the inflow from the cautious to the susceptible eventually expands the susceptible population and leads to the next wave. We also show that the CSIR model is isomorphic to the SIR model with time-varying parameters.

Background: During COVID-19 pandemic, a rapid readjustment to continued delivery of healthcare was required. Redeployment is an intentional process to mobilise human resources by reassigning a healthcare worker to a new role or new work location, to achieve sustainable delivery of patient care. We report redeployment experiences of staff from a specialist children's hospital during first and second waves of the United Kingdom COVID-19 pandemic.

High-Dose Cyproterone Acetate and Intracranial Meningioma: Impact of the Risk Minimisation Measures Implemented in France in 2018-2019.

Pharmacoepidemiol Drug Saf

January 2025

EPI-PHARE Scientific Interest Group in Epidemiology of Health Products (French National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products-ANSM, French National Health Insurance-CNAM), Saint-Denis, France.

Purpose: To measure the impact of national regulatory actions implemented in France in August 2018 and June 2019 to reduce the risk of meningioma associated with the use of cyproterone acetate (CPA).

Methods: Using the French National Healthcare database, we calculated the monthly number of CPA users among cisgender women, men and transgender women in 2010-2021, the monthly proportion of users with cerebral imaging screening, and the annual rate of meningioma surgery associated with CPA use. CPA discontinuations and switches were analysed.

Importance: Efforts to understand the complex association between social media use and mental health have focused on depression, with little investigation of other forms of negative affect, such as irritability and anxiety.

Objective: To characterize the association between self-reported use of individual social media platforms and irritability among US adults.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This survey study analyzed data from 2 waves of the COVID States Project, a nonprobability web-based survey conducted between November 2, 2023, and January 8, 2024, and applied multiple linear regression models to estimate associations with irritability.

Objective: To compare the effectiveness of the awake-prone position on relevant clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19-related acute respiratory failure requiring high-flow nasal oxygen between different waves in Argentina.

Methods: This multicenter, prospective cohort study included adult patients with COVID-19-related acute respiratory failure requiring high-flow nasal oxygen. The main exposure position was the awake-prone position (≥ 6 hours/day) compared to the non-prone position.

Disruption of seasonal influenza circulation and evolution during the 2009 H1N1 and COVID-19 pandemics in Southeastern Asia.

East, South, and Southeast Asia (together referred to as Southeastern Asia hereafter) have been recognized as critical areas fuelling the global circulation of seasonal influenza. However, the seasonal influenza migration network within Southeastern Asia remains unclear, including how pandemic-related disruptions altered this network. We leveraged genetic, epidemiological, and airline travel data between 2007-2023 to characterise the dispersal patterns of influenza A/H3N2 and B/Victoria viruses both out of and within Southeastern Asia, including during perturbations by the 2009 A/H1N1 and COVID-19 pandemics.
