AI Article Synopsis

  • The study aimed to assess how Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) affects the visual field (VF) in patients with advanced glaucoma who have already undergone trabeculectomy.
  • Results showed significant improvement in VF and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) for most eyes after the procedure, with 63.2% of eyes demonstrating better VF measurements.
  • There were no notable changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) or the number of glaucoma medications after surgery, indicating DSAEK is a beneficial option for enhancing vision in advanced glaucoma cases.

Article Abstract

: To evaluate changes in the visual field (VF) after Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) in eyes with advanced glaucoma and previous trabeculectomy. : Changes in VF, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), and number of glaucoma medications were analyzed before and after DSAEK in 19 eyes. The VFs were evaluated using the 10-2 program of the Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA) and/or Goldmann perimetry (GP). : In nine eyes, the MD improved from -22.24 ± 6.5 dB to -18.36 ± 5.1 dB in HFA. In five out of nine eyes, postoperative MD improved >1 dB compared to preoperative MD. In GP testing, 10 out of 15 eyes showed an improvement, that is, greater than 20° in VF enlargement by the isopter of I-4e and/or new detection of a smaller or darker isopter. Overall, improvement in VF with the HFA and/or GP test was observed in 12/19 (63.2%) eyes after DSAEK. Postoperative BCVA improved by more than two lines in logMAR VA in 18 of 19 (94.7%) eyes. There were no significant differences between the preoperative and postoperative IOP and the number of glaucoma medications. : DSAEK may produce subjective improvement in the visual field as well as improved visual acuity, even in advanced glaucomatous eyes.

Background: COVID-19 caused a huge backlog of patients in glaucoma clinics. This study describes redesign of an entire glaucoma service with electronic patient triage to three levels and utilisation of the Scottish optometry infrastructure of upskilled optometrists.

Methods: 2276 patients in glaucoma clinics were identified and triaged to three levels in keeping with Glauc-strat-fast guidance with local amendments.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the trends and characteristics of ocular trauma research published from 2000 to 2022 to delineate the trajectory of the field's research, provide information about the network of key contributors, and help determine future research strategies and direction.

Methods: Web of Science was queried for published works using a series of keywords relating to ocular trauma: "globe rupture", "ruptured globe", "globe injury", "ocular trauma", "intraocular foreign body", "eye trauma", "eye injury", and "traumatic endophthalmitis". All article information was compiled using the VOSviewer software.

Introduction And Aims: Blood loss is a common side-effect in orthognathic surgery. Deliberated hypotensive anaesthesia can reduce blood loss. The purpose was to evaluate the effect of add-on dexmedetomidine compared with the usual hypotensive drug bolus on blood loss and patient outcomes in orthognathic surgery.

Predictive updating of an object's spatial coordinates from pre-saccade to post-saccade contributes to stable visual perception. Whether object features are predictively remapped remains contested. We set out to characterise the spatiotemporal dynamics of feature processing during stable fixation and active vision.

Purpose: The purpose of the current study was to gain insight on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) interface designs for children with cortical visual impairment (CVI). Children with CVI frequently require AAC and specific interface supports, and customization may be necessary to support access and use of speech-generating devices.

Method: A focus group methodology was selected to gain feedback from vision professionals on helpful AAC features for children with CVI.
