Published: April 2024

Herein, the author summarize the basic findings on the neuropathology of inflammatory and autoimmune central nervous system (CNS) diseases. Current knowledge on infectious, demyelinating, and autoimmune diseases have also been reported. Further, I emphasize the importance of considering the neuropathology of meningitis, encephalitis, and abscesses as infectious diseases; multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica as demyelinating diseases; and vasculitis, paraneoplastic neurological syndrome, and collagen diseases as autoimmune diseases.

The role of BATF in immune cell differentiation and autoimmune diseases.

Biomark Res

January 2025

Department of Laboratory Medicine, Institute of Medical Immunology, Affiliated Hospital of Jiangsu University, Zhenjiang, China.

As a member of the Activator Protein-1 (AP-1) transcription factor family, the Basic Leucine Zipper Transcription Factor (BATF) mediates multiple biological functions of immune cells through its involvement in protein interactions and binding to DNA. Recent studies have demonstrated that BATF not only plays pivotal roles in innate and adaptive immune responses but also acts as a crucial factor in the differentiation and function of various immune cells. Lines of evidence indicate that BATF is associated with the onset and progression of allergic diseases, graft-versus-host disease, tumors, and autoimmune diseases.

NLRX1 limits inflammatory neurodegeneration in the anterior visual pathway.

J Neuroinflammation

January 2025

Department of Neurology, Division of Neuroimmunology, School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, 21287, USA.

Chronic innate immune activation in the central nervous system (CNS) significantly contributes to neurodegeneration in progressive multiple sclerosis (MS). Using multiple experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) models, we discovered that NLRX1 protects neurons in the anterior visual pathway from inflammatory neurodegeneration. We quantified retinal ganglion cell (RGC) density and optic nerve axonal degeneration, gliosis, and T-cell infiltration in Nlrx1 and wild-type (WT) EAE mice and found increased RGC loss and axonal injury in Nlrx1 mice compared to WT mice in both active immunization EAE and spontaneous opticospinal encephalomyelitis (OSE) models.

Background: Rare diseases (RDs) are a heterogeneous group of complex and low-prevalence conditions in which the time to establish a definitive diagnosis is often too long. In addition, for most RDs, few to no treatments are available and it is often difficult to find a specialized care team.

Objectives: The project "acERca las enfermedades raras" (in English: "bringing RDs closer") is an initiative primary designed to generate a consensus by a multidisciplinary group of experts to detect the strengths and weaknesses in the public healthcare system concerning the comprehensive care of persons living with a RD (PLWRD) in the region of Catalonia, Spain, where a Network of Clinical Expert Units (Xarxa d'Unitats de Expertesa Clínica or XUEC) was created and is being implemented since 2015.

Myricetin exposure reduces PC differentiation in vitro in primary human B cells.

Mol Med

January 2025

Center for Autoimmune Musculoskeletal and Hematopoietic Diseases, Institute of Molecular Medicine, The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, Northwell Health, 350 Community Drive, Manhasset, New York, 11030, USA.

Background: The process of B cell activation and plasma cell (PC) formation involves morphological, transcriptional, and metabolic changes in the B cell. Blocking or reducing PC differentiation is one approach to treat autoimmune diseases that are characterized by the presence of pathogenic autoantibodies. Recent studies have suggested the potential of myricetin, a natural flavonoid with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, to block or reduce PC differentiation.

Coeliac disease: complications and comorbidities.

Nat Rev Gastroenterol Hepatol

January 2025

Takeda Pharmaceuticals, Cambridge, MA, USA.

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease characterized by small intestinal villus atrophy and inflammation upon exposure to gluten. It has a global prevalence of approximately 1%. Although the gluten-free diet can be an effective treatment, this diet is burdensome with practical difficulties and frequent inadvertent gluten exposure.
