Electrochemical Detection of Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC) in Plant Tissues from Different Origins.

Published: April 2024

Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) is a reliable indicator of antioxidant content in animal and plant samples. The different experimental approaches available allow the determination of TAC using, as a reference, diverse compounds with recognized antioxidant capacities such as Trolox, ascorbic acid, gallic acid, or melatonin. A new portable device, named BRS (BQC redox system), is now commercially available that, through an electrochemical approach, allows the determination of TAC in a simple, fast, reproducible, and robust way. In this chapter, using this portable device, a comparative analysis of the TAC is assayed in different red, citrus, and Solanaceae fruits, several Allium species, and organs of different plant species, including Arabidopsis thaliana. The obtained results demonstrate the versatility of the BRS portable device.

Department of Military Traffic Injury Prevention and Control, Daping Hospital, Army Medical University, No. 10 Changjiang Branch Road, Yuzhong District, Chongqing, 400042, China.

The incidence of blast injuries has been rising globally, particularly affecting the lungs due to their vulnerability. Primary blast lung injury (PBLI) is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates, while early diagnostic methods are limited. With advancements in medical technology, and portable handheld ultrasound devices, the efficacy of ultrasound in detecting occult lung injuries early remains unclear.

Detection and analysis of organochlorine pesticides (OCP) residue is getting significant research importance because of their extensive use despite their hazardous effects on the health of people and the ecosystem. Despite the implementation of regulations and bans to safeguard human health and the environment, reports frequently reveal the continued use of these harmful chemicals in quantities exceeding the recommended limits set by regulatory boards. Data on the use of OCP from India, the most populous country, and African countries is not very encouraging.

January 2025

School of Precision Instrument and Opto-electronics Engineering, Tianjin University, Tianjin 300072 China. Electronic address:

The detection of pesticide residues in agricultural products is crucial for ensuring food safety. However, traditional methods are often constrained by slow processing speeds and a restricted analytical scope. This study presents a novel method that uses filter-array-based hyperspectral imaging enhanced by a dynamic filtering demosaicking algorithm, which significantly improves the speed and accuracy of detecting pesticide residues.
