This review aims to present the developments occurring in the field of artificial organs and particularly focuses on the presentation of developments in artificial kidneys. The challenges for biomedical engineering involved in overcoming the potential difficulties are showcased, as well as the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in this marriage of medicine and technology. In this review, modern artificial kidneys and the research efforts trying to provide and promise artificial kidneys are presented. But what are the problems faced by each technology and to what extent is the effort enough to date?

Hepatolenticular degeneration, also known as Wilson's disease, is a type of autosomal recessive genetic disorder of copper metabolism. The causative gene, ATP7B, is located on the long arm of chromosome 13 and encodes a P-type ATPase that is involved in copper transport. Pathogenic mutations in the ATP7B gene sequence lead to the diminished or lost function of the ATP7B protein, resulting in pathological copper deposition in organs such as the liver, brain, kidneys, and cornea.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a prevalent global health issue, primarily caused by glomerular dysfunction, diabetes, endovascular disorders, hypertensive nephrosclerosis, and other vascular diseases. Despite the increase in available organ sources, significant challenges remain in securing organ compatibility, prompting extensive research into creating a bio-artificial kidney free from immune rejection. In this study, a bio-engineered kidney was established using a stem cell chemoattractant within a bioreactor system; rBMSCs were used to recellularize the decellularized kidney scaffold coated with SDF-1α/AKI-CKD cytokine juice under mimic-hypoxic conditions as these chemokines and cytokines are crucial for the cell migration.
