The Global Temperament Project: Parent-reported temperament in infants, toddlers, and children from 59 nations. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Data from 83,423 parent reports of temperament (surgency, negative affectivity, and regulatory capacity) in infants, toddlers, and children from 341 samples gathered in 59 countries were used to investigate the relations among culture, gender, and temperament. Between-nation differences in temperament were larger than those obtained in similar studies of adult personality, and most pronounced for negative affectivity. Nation-level patterns of negative affectivity were consistent across infancy, toddlerhood, and childhood, and patterns of regulatory capacity were consistent between infancy and toddlerhood. Nations that previously reported high extraversion, high conscientiousness, and low neuroticism in adults were found to demonstrate high surgency in infants and children, and countries reporting low adult openness and high adult neuroticism reported high temperamental negative affectivity. Negative affectivity was high in Southern Asia, Western Asia, and South America and low in Northern and Western Europe. Countries in which children were rated as high in negative affectivity had cultural orientations reflecting collectivism, high power distance, and short-term orientation. Surgency was high in Southeastern and Southern Asia and Southern Europe and low in Eastern Asian countries characterized by philosophies of long-term orientation. Low personal income was associated with high negative affectivity. Gender differences in temperament were largely consistent in direction with prior studies, revealing higher regulatory capacity in females than males and higher surgency in males than females, with these differences becoming more pronounced at later ages. Academic procrastination is a multifaceted variable that encompasses different affective, cognitive, and behavioral factors, and has a high incidence in university students with important negative academic, personal, and social consequences. As such, this study aims to explain the levels of academic procrastination in relation to academic motivation and certain sociodemographic variables. The sample was composed of 117 students belonging to the University of Cuenca, Ecuador, they completed a questionnaire of sociodemographic variables, academic motivation scale and academic procrastination scale.

The impacting research on emotions of the last decades was carried out with different methods. The most popular was based on the use of a validated sample of slides, the International Affective Pictures System (IAPS), divided mainly into pleasant, neutral and unpleasant categories, and on fMRI as a measure of brain activation induced by these stimuli. With the present coordinate-based meta-analysis (CBMA) based on ALE approach, we aimed to unmask the main brain networks involved in the contrast of pleasant vs.

Test-Retest Reliability of Two Computationally-Characterised Affective Bias Tasks.

Comput Psychiatr

Anxiety Lab, Neuroscience and Mental Health Group, Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, University College London, UK.

Affective biases are commonly seen in disorders such as depression and anxiety, where individuals may show attention towards and preferential processing of negative or threatening stimuli. Affective biases have been shown to change with effective intervention: randomized controlled trials into these biases and the mechanisms that underpin them may allow greater understanding of how interventions can be improved and their success be maximized. For such trials to be informative, we must have reliable ways of measuring affective bias over time, so we can detect how and whether they are altered by interventions: the test-retest reliability of our measures puts an upper bound on our ability to detect any changes.

Objective: Lung cancer and its prolonged treatment are profoundly unsettling for patients and their family caregivers, and developing dyadic measures to alleviate their negative affectivity is pivotal. This study aimed to develop a complex intervention to alleviate dyadic psychological stress among patients with lung cancer and their family caregivers.

Methods: A stepwise multi-method study was conducted following the Medical Research Council framework.

Background: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is commonly attributed to neuro-cognitive deficits of genetic and/or prenatal/perinatal environmental origins. Sonuga-Barke proposed an alternative formulation, suggesting that ADHD behaviors are functional expressions of delay aversion-a strong motivational disposition to avoid or escape negative affective states evoked by delay. It is hypothesized that the strength of this disposition, though neuro-biologically rooted, is exacerbated by early negative social interactions during waiting-related encounters.
