Optimizing strategies for slowing the spread of invasive species.

Invasive species are spreading worldwide, causing damage to ecosystems, biodiversity, agriculture, and human health. A major question is, therefore, how to distribute treatment efforts cost-effectively across space and time to prevent or slow the spread of invasive species. However, finding optimal control strategies for the complex spatial-temporal dynamics of populations is complicated and requires novel methodologies. Here, we develop a novel algorithm that can be applied to various population models. The algorithm finds the optimal spatial distribution of treatment efforts and the optimal propagation speed of the target species. We apply the algorithm to examine how the results depend on the species' demography and response to the treatment method. In particular, we analyze (1) a generic model and (2) a detailed model for the management of the spongy moth in North America to slow its spread via mating disruption. We show that, when utilizing optimization approaches to contain invasive species, significant improvements can be made in terms of cost-efficiency. The methodology developed here offers a much-needed tool for further examination of optimal strategies for additional cases of interest.

Beyond the role of bats as natural host reservoirs of infectious agents, the impact of viral spillover from other animal species to bats has been neglected. Given the limited virus-host specificity of astroviruses (AstVs) and their propensity for cross-species transmission, we hypothesized that AstVs could be transmitted within animal communities (rodents, birds, and bats) and that native endemic bats may be exposed to viruses hosted by other species. We investigated the presence of AstV RNA in 3,796 biological samples collected in Reunion Island from ( = 3421), an endemic free-tailed bat species, and also from small terrestrial mammals and birds: ( = 146), ( = 74), ( = 36), ( = 99), and ( = 20).

Gastrointestinal infections present major challenges to ruminant livestock systems, and gut health is a key constraint on fitness, welfare, and productivity. Fecal biomarkers present opportunities to monitor animal health without using invasive methods, and with greater resolution compared to observational metrics. Here we developed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for three potential fecal biomarkers of gut health in domestic ruminants: two immunological (total immunoglobulin [Ig]A and total IgG) and one inflammatory (lactoferrin).

Surface Bi-vacancy and corona polarization engineered nanosheets with sonopiezocatalytic antibacterial activity for wound healing.

Piezocatalytic therapy is an emerging therapeutic strategy for eradicating drug-resistant bacteria, but suffers from insufficient piezoelectricity and catalytic active site availability. Herein, Bi-vacancies (BiV) and corona polarization were introduced to BiOBr nanosheets to create a BiOBr-BiVP nanoplatform for piezocatalytic antibacterial therapy. This meticulously tailored strategy strengthens the built-in electric field of nanosheets, enhancing piezoelectric potential and charge density and boosting charge separation and migration efficiency.
