Nonstationary optics: tutorial.

J Opt Soc Am A Opt Image Sci Vis

Published: April 2024

Over the past several decades, nonstationary optics has risen as a key enabling technology for a multitude of novel applications. These include areas of research such as micromachining and ultrafast optics, as well as the Nobel awarded research in femtochemistry, optical frequency combs, and attosecond physics. This tutorial aims to present some of the main concepts required to analyze nonstationary fields, with an emphasis on pulsed beams. The work begins from the fundamental building blocks of such fields, and builds up to some of their main properties. The spatiotemporal properties and stability of such fields are discussed in length, and some common measurement schemes are reviewed.

The fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation: Soliton turbulence, modulation instability, and extreme rogue waves.

In this paper, we undertake a systematic exploration of soliton turbulent phenomena and the emergence of extreme rogue waves within the framework of the one-dimensional fractional nonlinear Schrödinger (FNLS) equation, which appears in many fields, such as nonlinear optics, Bose-Einstein condensates, plasma physics, etc. By initiating simulations with a plane wave modulated by small noise, we scrutinized the universal regimes of non-stationary turbulence through various statistical indices. Our analysis elucidates a marked increase in the probability of rogue wave occurrences as the system evolves within a certain range of Lévy index α, which can be ascribed to the broadened modulation instability bandwidth.

Non-stationary physiological noise poses significant difficulties due to its time-varying and previously unknown characteristics. When processing electronystagmographic signals, linear filtering can distort diagnostically significant rapid changes caused by saccadic eye movements. In such cases, nonlinear filters based on robust estimators are more appropriate, whereas linear filtering effectively reduces white noise in parts of a signal with linear behaviour.

: Brain-computer interface (BCI) control systems monitor neural activity to detect the user's intentions, enabling device control through mental imagery. Despite their potential, decoding neural activity in real-world conditions poses significant challenges, making BCIs currently impractical compared to traditional interaction methods. This study introduces a novel motor imagery (MI) BCI control strategy for operating a physically assistive robotic arm, addressing the difficulties of MI decoding from electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, which are inherently non-stationary and vary across individuals.

Osteoporosis is a systemic disease with a high incidence in the elderly and seriously affects the quality of life of patients. Photoacoustic (PA) technology, which combines the advantages of light and ultrasound, can provide information about the physiological structure and chemical information of biological tissues in a non-invasive and non-radiative way. Due to the complex structural characteristics of bone tissue, PA signals generated by bone tissue are non-stationary and nonlinear.

Purpose: Wearable or non-contact, non-intrusive devices present a practical alternative to traditional polysomnography (PSG) for daily assessment of sleep quality. Physiological signals have been known to be nonlinear and nonstationary as the body adapts to states of rest or activity. By integrating more sophisticated nonlinear methodologies, the accuracy of sleep stage identification using such devices can be improved.
