Currently, aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) have grown to be a good choice for large-scale energy storage systems due to their high theoretical specific capacity, low redox potential, low cost, and non-toxicity of the aqueous electrolyte. However, it is still challenging to obtain high specific capacity and stability suitable cathodes. Herein, hierarchical self-supporting potassium ammonium vanadate@MXene (KNVO@MXene) hybrid films were prepared by vacuum filtration method. Due to the three-dimensional nanoflower structure of KNVO with dual ions intercalation, high conductivity of two-dimensional TiCT MXene, and the hierarchical self-supporting structure, the AZIB based on the KNVO@MXene hybrid film cathode possessed superior specific capacity (481 mAh/g at 0.3 A/g) and cycling stability (retaining 125 mAh/g after 1000 cycles at a high current density of 10 A/g). In addition, the storage mechanism was revealed by various ex-situ characterizations. Hence, a new viewpoint for the preparation of AZIB self-supporting cathode materials is presented.

Article Synopsis
  • - Developing efficient catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in seawater electrolysis is key for producing green hydrogen, and carbonized wood (CW) is a promising material due to its sustainable and porous properties.
  • - This study compares the electrocatalytic performance of various types of CW, including carbonized poplar, balsa, fir, and pine, with carbonized poplar demonstrating the best performance due to its larger electrochemically active surface area and functional groups.
  • - The carbonized poplar (PoCW) shows a low overpotential in both alkaline freshwater and seawater and maintains durability over 100 hours, highlighting the potential of metal-free, CW-based electrodes for effective hydrogen production.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) with MnO cathodes have promising application prospects; however, their performance is hindered by their low efficiency and insufficient life. By leveraging the nanomicellar properties of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), a hierarchical δ-MnO with 2D/3D structure was directionally grown on a modified carbon cloth (CC) collector for realizing high-mass-loading AZIBs. Experimental results reveal the synergistic effects of micro/nano hierarchically structured MnO-CC heterointerfaces in accelerating the electron migration and transfer rate of Zn/H.

Article Synopsis
  • * A combination of molecular probes and density functional theory calculations was used to investigate how Fe atoms affect the OER rate-determining steps in a self-supporting NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) structure created through a simple corrosion process.
  • * Results show that the Fe-doped NiOOH has lower OH* adsorption energy and better charge injection efficiency, leading to remarkable catalytic activities for OER and water-splitting in alkaline conditions, indicating potential for efficient self-supporting electrodes in

In recent years, there has been significant interest in transition-metal sulfides (TMSs) due to their economic affordability and excellent catalytic activity. Nevertheless, it is difficult for TMSs to achieve satisfactory performance due to problems such as low conductivity, limited catalytic activity, and inadequate stability. Therefore, a catalyst with a heterostructure constituted of a nickel-iron-layered double hydroxide, nickel sulfide, molybdenum disulfide, and cerium dioxide was designed.
