We describe a helium source cell for use in cryogenic experiments that is hermetically sealed in situ on the cold plate of a cryostat. The source cell is filled with helium gas at room temperature and, subsequently, sealed using a cold weld crimping tool before the cryostat is closed and cooled down. At low temperatures, the helium condenses and collects in a connected experimental volume, as monitored via the frequency response of a planar superconducting resonator device sensitive to small amounts of liquid helium. This on-cryostat helium source negates the use of a filling tube between the cryogenic volumes and room temperature, thereby preventing unwanted effects such as temperature instabilities that arise from the thermomechanical motion of helium within the system. This helium source can be used in experiments investigating the properties of quantum fluids or to better thermalize quantum devices.

Dicarboxylic acids (DCAs), with their deliquescence and hygroscopic nature, can function as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and ice nuclei (IN), affecting rainfall patterns. DCA analysis can serve as organic molecular markers for anthropogenic and biogenic sources. Very few studies deal with the optimization of the protocol for qualitative and quantitative analysis of DCAs using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

Etching Chemistry Process Optimization of Ethylene Diluted with Helium (CH/He) in Interconnect Integration.

Micromachines (Basel)

November 2024

School of Integrative Engineering, Chung-Ang University, 84, Heukseok-ro, Dongjak-gu, Seoul 06974, Republic of Korea.

This study explores the effects of different passivation gases on the properties of polymers formed on aluminum (Al) sidewalls during the etching process in Al-based interconnect structures. The research compares the use of nitrogen (N) and ethylene diluted with helium (CH/He) as passivation gases, focusing on the resulting polymer's composition, thickness, and strength, as well as the levels of residual chlorine post-etch. The findings reveal that using CH leads to the formation of a thinner, weaker polymer with lower chlorine residue compared to the thicker, stronger polymer formed with N.

Photon (X-ray) radiotherapy is the most common treatment used in cancer therapy. However, the exposure of normal tissues and organs at risk to ionising radiation often results in a significant incidence of low-grade adverse side effects, whilst high-grade toxicities also occur at concerningly high rates. As an alternative, boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) aims to create densely ionising helium and lithium ions directly within cancer cells, thus sparing the surrounding normal cells and tissues but also leading to significantly more effective tumour control than X-rays.

Vertical and horizontal variabilities of ammonia in an agricultural area of Southeast China.

J Environ Manage

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Soil and Sustainable Agriculture, Changshu National Agro Ecosystem Observation and Research Station, Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing, 210008, China; University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, 100049, China; University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing, 211135, China.

Ammonia (NH) plays a crucial role in the global nitrogen cycle, the increased NH emissions from agricultural activities impacting air, soil, water quality, and human health. Accurately estimating both the vertical and horizontal transport distances of NH are important for effective pollution control. Therefore, we used a helium-filled balloon mounted sampler to analyze the vertical profiles of NH emissions and their seasonal variations in an agricultural area of southeast China.

Aim: The intricate structure of the tooth root canals has a role in the colonization and biofilm formation in hidden areas that are hardly reached by standard endodontic treatments. This review aims at summarizing data from and studies for a better understanding of the application of cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) for the disinfection of dental root canals.

Methods: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were screened.
