High-temperature piezoelectric materials, which enable the accurate and reliable sensing of physical parameters to guarantee the functional operation of various systems under harsh conditions, are highly demanded. To this end, both large piezoelectricity and high Curie temperature are pivotal figures of merit (FOMs) for high-temperature piezoceramics. Unfortunately, despite intensive pursuits, it remains a formidable challenge to unravel the inverse correlation between these FOMs. Herein, a conceptual material paradigm of multiscale structural engineering was proposed to address this dilemma. The synergistic effects of phase structure reminiscent of a polymorphic phase boundary and refined domain morphology simultaneously contribute to a large piezoelectric coefficient of 30.3 pC/N and a high Curie temperature of 740 °C in (LiCeNd) codoped NaBiNbO (NBN-LCN) ceramics. More encouragingly, the system has exceptional thermal stability and is nonsusceptible to mechanical loading. This study not only demonstrates that the high-performance and robust NBN-LCN high-temperature piezoceramics hold great potential for implements under harsh conditions but also opens an avenue for integrating antagonistic properties for the enhancement of the collective performance in functional materials.

Good piezoelectricity and high resistivity are prerequisites for high-temperature acceleration sensors to function correctly in high-temperature environments. Bismuth layered structure ferroelectrics (BLSFs) are promising candidates for piezoelectric ceramics with excellent piezoelectric performance at high temperatures, high electrical resistivity, and high Curie temperatures (). In this study, (LiMn) is substituted for Bi at the A-site, and Ce-doping is performed to replace Ti ions in NaBiTiO, which achieves the desired combination of high piezoelectric coefficients and high resistivity.

Precipitation hardening has been recently validated as a new mechanism for domain wall pinning and mechanical loss reduction in piezoelectrics. While anisometric precipitates have high pinning strengths, there is limited knowledge about the electrical anisotropy of the precipitation-hardened piezoceramics. In the present work, we successfully orient the precipitates in LiNaNbO piezoceramics by applying a uniaxial stress during the aging and studied its electrical anisotropy.

High temperature piezoelectric energy harvester (HT-PEH) is an important solution to replace chemical battery to achieve independent power supply of HT wireless sensors. However, simultaneously excellent performances, including high figure of merit (FOM), insulation resistivity (ρ) and depolarization temperature (T) are indispensable but hard to achieve in lead-free piezoceramics, especially operating at 250 °C has not been reported before. Herein, well-balanced performances are achieved in BiFeO-BaTiO ceramics via innovative defect engineering with respect to delicate manganese doping.

Article Synopsis
  • Notable advancements have been made in lead-free piezoceramics, specifically KNN-based materials, focusing on enhancing their piezoelectric properties.
  • The study introduces Li/Sb-codoped KNN ceramics, achieving a high electrostrain of 0.43% and a d* value of 2177 pm/V at 20 kV/cm, while maintaining stability with less than 15% performance loss from room temperature to 150 °C.
  • The improved performance is attributed to defect engineering (A-site vacancy-oxygen vacancy dipoles) and optimized domain structures that enhance strain stability under varying temperatures.
