Background: Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a potent pro-angiogenic molecule promoting the angiogenic phenotype of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Studies demonstrated that rs3756261 polymorphism was associated with the risk of inflammatory diseases, but not including AS.

Methods: To investigate the association between rs3756261 polymorphism and the risk of AS, we genotyped the rs3756261 polymorphism in 208 patients with AS and 412 controls in a Chinese Han population using a custom-by-design 48-Plex SNP scan Kit. The serum EGF levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 208 AS patients and 412 controls.

Results: Our data indicated that rs3756261 polymorphism was associated with an increased risk of AS in the Chinese Han population. Stratified analyses indicated that the rs3756261 polymorphism elevated the risk of AS among the males, smokers, drinkers and those aged <30 years. In addition, the rs3756261 polymorphism was related to increased CRP and HLA-B27 levels in AS patients. Next, we found that the average serum levels of EGF were significantly higher in AS patients compared with controls. Meanwhile, EGF serum levels were significantly higher in AG genotype carriers when compared with AA genotype carriers in AS patients.

Conclusion: In conclusion, this study indicated that rs3756261 polymorphism was associated with the risk of AS and EGF serum levels in a Chinese Han population.

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) has been found to be associated with the development and repair mechanisms of several renal diseases. In this study, we hypothesized that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in EGF or its receptor genes might have an association with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or acute renal allograft rejection (AR) in a Korean population. Three-hundred and forty seven recipients of the first renal transplants for ESRD, including 63 AR patients along with 289 healthy adults were included in the study.

Purpose: Recent studies have suggested that specific single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) contribute to the clinical features of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). In this study, we investigated the relationships of genetic polymorphisms of the epidermal growth factor () gene and the epidermal growth factor receptor () gene with BPH.

Methods: A total of 218 patients with BPH were enrolled in this study.

Article Synopsis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease with significant genetic links, particularly involving the epidermal growth factor (EGF), which impacts cell growth and DNA synthesis.
  • Researchers conducted a study on EGF polymorphisms in a group of Chinese patients with RA, focusing on two specific genetic variations, rs11568835 G/A and rs3756261 T/C.
  • The findings indicated that the AA genotype of EGF rs11568835 was associated with a higher risk of developing RA, while the other polymorphism (rs3756261) showed no correlation with RA susceptibility.

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is critical in cancer progression and various genotypes of the EGF gene have been reported to be correlated with susceptibility to gastric cancer; however, the results are unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the associations of functional EGF gene polymorphisms and risk of gastric cancer in a Chinese population. We genotyped seven functional single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the EGF gene [rs3756261, rs11568835 and rs4444903 in the promoter region; rs11568943, rs2237051 and rs11569017 in the non-synonymous exon region and rs3733625 in the 3' untranslated region (UTR)] in a hospital-based case-control study, including 387 gastric cancer cases and 392 healthy controls by polymerase chain reaction-ligation detection reaction (PCR-LDR) methods.
