When aqueous solutions of DNA were treated with 10-500 grays of gamma-rays, the imidazole rings of some adenine and guanine residues underwent scission, resulting in the conversion of these purines to formamidopyrimidines. It was found that formamidopyrimidine-DNA glycosylase, known to remove imidazole-ring-opened 7-methylguanine from DNA, did not excise the radiation-induced non-alkylated formamidopyrimidines formed for adenine and guanine. The repair of these ring-opened purines was found to involve an enzymatic recyclizing of the opened imidazole ring that effects a restoration of the C-8 to N-9 bond. The enzyme, purine imidazole-ring cyclase reclosed the imidazole rings of 90% of ring-opened adenine or guanine, but did not close the opened imidazole ring of 7-methylguanine-derived formamidopyrimidine in DNA.

Cholesterol-terminated cationic lipidated oligomers (CLOs) as a new class of antifungals.

J Mater Chem B

January 2025

Drug Delivery, Disposition, and Dynamics Theme, Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University, 381 Royal Pde, Parkville, VIC, 3052, Australia.

Infections caused by fungal pathogens are a global health problem, and have created an urgent need for new antimicrobial strategies. This report details the synthesis of lipidated 2-vinyl-4,4-dimethyl-5-oxazolone (VDM) oligomers an optimized Cu(0)-mediated reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) approach. Cholesterol-Br was used as an initiator to synthesize a library of oligo-VDM (degree of polymerisation = 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25), with an α-terminal cholesterol group.

A novel HSO-catalyzed ANRORC-type rearrangement of pyrazinones to imidazoles proceeding through pyridazino[]annulation with simultaneous introduction of a pyrazole ring at position 2 of the imidazole system has been developed, which offers efficient and expedited access to new biheterocyclic systems - 2-(pyrazol-3-ul)imidazoles and 2-(pyrazol-3-yl)imidazo[4,5-]pyridazines. Diverse bi--heterocyclic systems with the imidazo[4,5-]pyridazine-4,7-diamine moiety could be obtained in excellent yield when 5,6-dicyano-3-(2-oxo-2-ethyl)pyrazin-2(1)-ones interact with hydrazines the selective spiro-formation in a tandem ring-opening/ring-closing process, which allowed the simultaneous construction of five new C-N bonds. This new method is compatible with an array of functional groups, proceeds under mild reaction conditions with the involvement of commercially available reagents.

Guest transport through discrete voids (closed pores) in crystalline solids is poorly understood. Herein, we report the gas sorption properties of a nonporous coordination network, [Co(bib)2Cl2]n·2MeOH (sql-bib-Co-Cl-α), featuring square lattice (sql) topology and the bent linker 1,3-bis(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene (bib). The as-synthesized sql-bib-Co-Cl-α has 11.

Electrochemical UV-SERS of adenine on cobalt electrode.

Spectrochim Acta A Mol Biomol Spectrosc

January 2025

Center for Physical Sciences and Technology (FTMC), Saulėtekio Ave. 3 LT-10257 Vilnius, Lithuania. Electronic address:

The combination of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy in the ultraviolet spectral region (UV-SERS) with resonance Raman scattering enhancement, referred to as UV-SERRS, enables ultrasensitive and reliable detection of biomolecules because of the strong electronic transition of many biologically important compounds in UV region. Adenine solution studies by UV-Raman spectroscopy revealed pre-resonant enhancement of various modes by 2-16 times at 325 nm excitation wavelength. Adsorption and structural properties of adenine on a cobalt electrode were probed by UV-SERS.

Strong coupling FeVO nanoparticles/3D N-doped interconnected porous carbon derived from MOFs by confined adsorption-assembly-pyrolysis for greatly boosting oxygen reduction.

Low-cost and effective electrocatalysts are critical for energy storage and conversion. Herein, iron(III) and vanadium(III) acetylacetonates were first adsorbed and confined in porous zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), which further cross-linked together by the methanol-induced-assembly. Following the pyrolysis, the FeVO nanoparticles were efficiently encapsulated within three-dimensional (3D) N-doped interconnected porous carbon, termed FeVO/NIPC.
