Multimodal imaging in deferasirox-mediated retinopathy.

Published: July 2024

Introduction: Deferasirox is the only iron chelator available in oral formulation and a rare cause of pigmentary retinopathy. We report the first case of multimodal imaging in an adult with deferasirox retinopathy.

Methods: Case report and literature review, with search terms including deferasirox retinopathy and deferasirox toxicity.

Results: A 63-year-old man with end stage renal disease and transfusion-dependent anemia on deferasirox for one year presented with asymptomatic pigment epitheliopathy. Optical coherence tomography featured outer retinal and retinal pigment epithelial discontinuity corresponding to hypoautofluorescence on fundus autofluorescence and blocking on fluorescein angiography. Multifocal electroretinography revealed subtle reduction in all amplitudes.

Conclusions: Retinal examinations should be considered for patients requiring chronic administration of deferasirox.

Salivary steroids in acute central serous chorioretinopathy.

Int Ophthalmol

January 2025

University of Pittsburgh, UPMC Eye Center, 203 Lothrop Street, Pittsburgh, PA, 15213, USA.

Purpose: To analyze levels of salivary steroids, including 17-OH-progesterone (17-OHP), androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone, cortisol, cortisone, progesterone, testosterone, and estradiol, in patients with acute central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) patients.

Methods: Acute CSCR patients and healthy individuals were included in this observational case-control study. Levels of salivary steroids were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry detection.

Background: To define optimal parameters for the evaluation of vessel visibility in intracranial stents (ICS) and flow diverters (FD) using photon-counting detector computed tomography angiography (PCD-CTA) with spectral reconstructions.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed consecutive patients with implanted ICS or FD, who received a PCD-CTA between April 2023 and March 2024. Polyenergetic, virtual monoenergetic, pure lumen, and iodine reconstructions with different keV levels (40, 60, and 80) and reconstruction kernels (body vascular [Bv]48, Bv56, Bv64, Bv72, and Bv76) were evaluated by two radiologists with regions of interests and Likert scales.

Purpose: The underlying mechanism why segmentectomy has demonstrated the non-inferiority to lobectomy in several randomized trials remains unclear. Computed tomography (CT)-measured pulmonary artery (PA) enlargement reflects PA pressure and predicts the prognosis of certain respiratory diseases. We compared the preoperative and postoperative PA diameter to the ascending aorta diameter (PA/A) ratio, investigating its impact on right ventricular function in lung resection.

We report on a fatal case of invasive fungal rhinosinusitis with after lung transplantation. After endoscopic treatment and adjuvant medical therapy with isavuconazole, caspofungin and an investigational antifungal drug, there was a good clinical response with absence of endoscopic and radiographic disease. However, the patient developed disease recurrence, with signs of intracranial involvement on MRI, for which urgent endoscopic sinus surgery was performed and isavuconazole was restarted.

Agreement between Color, Fluorescein Angiography, and SD-OCT in the Detection of Macular Fibrosis in Neovascular AMD.

Am J Ophthalmol

Centre for Public Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Queen's University Belfast, Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. Electronic address:

Purpose: Color imaging is the accepted reference standard for detection of macular fibrosis in neovascular age-macular degeneration. Other imaging modalities of fluorescein angiography (FA) and spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) are also used but no formal agreement studies exist. We evaluated the agreement between fibrosis on colour, FA and SD-OCT-detected hyperreflective material (HRM) and their clinical relevance.
