SiN bioceramics were fabricated using GPS and SPS method with MgO-REO (RE = La, Nd, Gd, Ho and Lu) sintering additives. The effect of sintering methods and sintering additives on the grain growth, mechanical, antimicrobial properties and color of SiN bioceramics were studied. Samples sintered with GPS are composed of β-SiN and samples sintered with SPS are composed of α-SiN and β-SiN. The growth of β-SiN grains in samples sintered with GPS are more adequate. Samples sintered with GPS exhibit a S. aureus inactivation rate up to 98% and a bright color appearance with a hardness of about 13 GPa and a fracture toughness up to 7.5 MPa m, suitable for dental implants. And samples sintered with SPS exhibit a hardness of about 17 GPa and a fracture toughness about 6 MPa m.

Benchtop Machining of Self-Standing Alumina Doughs for Low-Number Fabrication and Prototyping.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

Cold isostatic pressing, gel casting, and protein coagulation are the most common techniques to produce green bodies prior to computer numerical control (CNC)-based machining for the near-net-scale shaping of ceramics. These methods typically involve various additives and entail several steps to create a green body that is capable of withstanding machining forces. Here, utilizing a single additive, we first introduced a facile benchtop method to generate self-standing, malleable doughs of alumina in under 2 min.

Chess-like Pieces Realized by Selective Laser Sintering of PA12 Powder: 3D Printing and Micro-Tomographic Assessment.

Polymers (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Applied Science and Technology (DISAT), Politecnico di Torino, Corso Duca Degli Abruzzi 24, 10129 Torino, Italy.

The paper highlights the realization of 3D-printed parts with complex geometries, such as chess-like pieces, using polyamide 12 (PA12) as polymeric powder via selective laser sintering (SLS). The research activity focuses on the study of the powder printability, the optimization of the printing parameters, and the tomographic evaluation of the printed objects. Morphological analyses were carried out to study the PA12 powder microstructure considering that SLS required specific particle size distribution and shape, able to guarantee a good flowability necessary to take part in a sintering process.

Department of Engineering "Enzo Ferrari", University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Via P. Vivarelli 10, 41125 Modena, Italy.

The development of new bioactive glasses (BGs) with enhanced bioactivity and improved resistance to crystallization is crucial for overcoming the main challenges faced by commercial BGs. Most shaping processes require thermal treatments, which can induce partial crystallization, negatively impacting the biological and mechanical properties of the final product. In this study, we present a novel bioactive glass composition, S53P4_MSK, produced by a melt-quench route.

Sintering Ag Nanoclusters on TiO Nanoparticles as an Efficient Catalyst for Nitroarene Reduction.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Green Chemical Process of Ministry of Education, School of Chemistry and Environmental Engineering, Wuhan Institute of Technology, Wuhan 430205, China.

Polydispersed Ag species-modified TiO samples with abundant oxygen vacancies were successfully prepared through the calcination of atomically precise Ag nanocluster-loaded TiO at an optimal temperature under a nitrogen atmosphere. The ligands of the Ag nanoclusters are removed by extracting lattice oxygen from TiO during the calcination, leading to the formation of CO, SO, and HO vapor. This process simultaneously induces Ag species sintering on the surface of TiO.
