Z-scheme heterostructure-based photocatalysts consist of a reduction photocatalyst and an oxidation photocatalyst, enabling them to possess a high capacity for both reduction and oxidation. However, the coupling reaction between photocatalytic H generation through water reduction and sterilization using Z-scheme systems has been rarely reported. Herein, 1D WO nanowires embedded over 2D g-CN nanosheets are well-constructed as an integrated Z-scheme heterojunction. Experimental results and density functional theory calculations not only demonstrate the achievement of efficient interfacial charge separation and transport, leading to prolonged lifetime of photogenerated charge carriers, but also directly confirm the mechanism of Z-scheme charge transfer. As expected, the optimized WO/g-CN nanostructure exhibits superior photocatalytic sterilization activity against as well as excellent H generation performance under visible-light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm). Due to its nontoxic nature, WO/g-CN holds great potential in eradicating bacterial infections in living organisms.

In the field of solar energy storage, photocatalytic ammonia production is a next-generation technology. The rapid recombination of charges and insignificant utilization of the sunlight spectrum are bottlenecks of effective photocatalytic N fixation. The introduction of impurities in the crystal lattice and the development of heterojunctions could effectively segregate carriers and improve the solar-light-harvesting capability, which can boost NH generation.

The natural Z-scheme of oxygenic photosynthesis efficiently drives electron transfer from photosystem II (PSII) to photosystem I (PSI) via an electron transport chain, despite the lower energy levels of PSII. Inspired by this sophisticated mechanism, we present a layered cascade bio-solar cell (CBSC) that emulates the Z-scheme. In this design, chlorophyll derivatives (Chl) act as PSI analogs, while bacteriochlorophyll derivatives (BChl) serve as PSII analogs in the active layer.

Crafting anisotropically epitaxial p-n heterostructures with Z-scheme charge transmission is a promising avenue toward excellent photocatalytic efficiency, yet the large lattice mismatch and diverse crystal growth habits between components have often arisen as a big challenge to this goal. Here, anisotropically epitaxial p-n heterostructures with 19.8% lattice mismatch are obtained via a dynamics-mediated seeded growth tactic under reaction temperature as low as 60 °C.

A self-powered dual-electrode aptasensor was developed for the detection of tumor marker carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). The composite BiVO/ZnInS, which is capable of forming a Z-scheme heterojunction, was chosen as the photoanode, and the AuNP/CuBiO complex was chosen as the photocathode in photoelectrochemical (PEC) detection. The experiments showed that the constructed self-powered dual-electrode system had a good photoelectric response to white light, and the photocurrent signal of the photocathode was significantly enhanced under the influence of the photoanode.

Photocatalytic CO reduction technology plays a significant role in the energy and environmental sectors, highlighting the necessity for developing high-efficiency and stable catalysts. In this study, a novel photocatalyst, xNiCoO/CN (x = 1, 3, and 5 wt%), was synthesized by depositing zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67)-derived nickel cobaltate (NiCoO) hollow nanocages onto porous graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN, CN) nanosheets for photocatalytic CO reduction. Under visible light irradiation, the resulting 3NiCoO/CN photocatalyst demonstrated exceptional CO yields of up to 2879.
