The MEMS microphone is a representative device among the MEMS family, which has attracted substantial research interest, and those tailored for human voice have earned distinct success in commercialization. Although sustained development persists, challenges such as residual stress, environmental noise, and structural innovation are posed. To collect and summarize the recent advances in this subject, this paper presents a concise review concerning the transduction mechanism, diverse mechanical structure topologies, and effective methods of noise reduction for high-performance MEMS microphones with a dynamic range akin to the audible spectrum, aiming to provide a comprehensive and adequate analysis of this scope.

Understanding speech in noisy settings is harder for hearing-impaired (HI) people than for normal-hearing (NH) people, even when speech is audible. This is often attributed to hearing loss altering the neural encoding of temporal and/or spectral speech cues. Here, we investigated whether this difference may also be due to an impaired ability to adapt to background noise.

Gender and language effects on the long-term average speech spectrum (LTASS) have been reported, but typically using recordings that were bandlimited and/or failed to accurately capture extended high frequencies (EHFs). Accurate characterization of the full-band LTASS is warranted given recent data on the contribution of EHFs to speech perception. The present study characterized the LTASS for high-fidelity, anechoic recordings of males and females producing Bamford-Kowal-Bench sentences, digits, and unscripted narratives.

Older adults with hearing loss may experience difficulty recognizing speech in noise due to factors related to attenuation (e.g., reduced audibility and sensation levels, SLs) and distortion (e.

Recently, the possibility to reproduce complex continuous acoustic signals via pulsed laser-plasma sound sources was demonstrated. This was achieved by optoacoustic transduction of dense laser pulse trains, modulated via single- or multi-bit Sigma-Delta, in the air or on solid targets. In this work, we extend the laser-sound concept to amplitude modulation techniques.
