Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with alcohol abuse and higher ethanol sensitivity later in life. Currently, it is poorly understood how ethanol sensitivity changes with time after TBI and whether there are sex-dependent differences in the relationship between TBI and ethanol sensitivity. This study uses the fruit fly to investigate how TBI affects alcohol sensitivity and whether the effects are sex-specific. Our results indicate that flies have a significantly higher sensitivity to the intoxicating levels of ethanol during the acute phase post-TBI, regardless of sex. The increased ethanol sensitivity decreases as time progresses; however, females take longer than males to recover from the heightened ethanol sensitivity. Dietary restriction does not improve the negative effects of alcohol post-TBI. We found that mutant flies exhibit a similar ethanol sensitivity to TBI flies. However, TBI increased the ethanol sensitivity of mutants, suggesting that TBI and loss of function have additive effects on ethanol sensitivity.

Background: Chronic, excessive alcohol consumption causes neurodegeneration and is associated with an increased risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementias. Moreover, there has been a consistent rise in alcohol consumption in older adults in the past few decades. However, there is minimal research showing how alcohol consumption affects AD neuropathogenesis and biological mechanisms remain unclear.

Antimicrobial resistance poses a global public health threat, compelling the search for alternative treatments, especially in resource-limited settings. The increasing ineffectiveness of traditional antibiotics has intensified the need to explore medicinal plants as viable therapeutic options. This study sought to compare the efficacy of certain medicinal plants used in Owerri, Nigeria, for treating pathogenic bacteria against traditional commercial antibiotics.

The influence of solute concentration and filtration on mesoscale clusters of flufenamic acid, a typical pharmaceutical compound, in ethanol.

Hypothesis: It is hypothesised in this work that mesoscale clusters will be present in both undersaturated and supersaturated solutions of organic pharmaceutical molecules. These clusters, being loose aggregates, could be sensitive to shear forces experienced during filtration. Thus, comparing the behaviour of these clusters alongside nanoparticles during filtration-an important sample treatment parameter during crystallization-will elucidate qualitative differences from solid, crystalline nanoparticles of similar size.

In this investigation, a novel tetradentate Schiff base ligand, (ligand L) was synthesized using a simple chemical route assisted by triethylenetetramine with 4-dimethylaminocinnamaldehyde in ethanol. The chemical structure of the as-synthesized ligand was characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and UV-visible spectroscopy. This ligand was then employed to modify the working electrode of screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) for developing a modified L/SPCE sensor finalized to detection of lead ions (Pb).

The extracellular domain (ECD) of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) serves as a promising biomarker for the early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer (BC). However, due to the heterogeneity of tumors, assessing HER2 status through a core needle biopsy presents significant challenges. In this study, we propose a facile and high-performance electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA) platform utilizing a herceptin-encapsulated gold nanoclusters (HER-AuNCs)/(diisopropylamino)ethanol (DIPEA-OH) ECL system for the clinical evaluation of HER2 ECD in BC patients.
