Background: The topography of arterial territories has been defined using digital maps of supratentorial infarcts. Regions with a high probability of infarction (Pi) exist in the deep compartment due to a paucity of collaterals. However, less attention has been given to regions with a low Pi.

Methods: Using published digital maps, patients with cortical stroke and documented vessel occlusion were included. Infarcts from T-weighted magnetic resonance images were segmented and registered onto a standard brain template (Montreal Neurological Institute 152). Segmented magnetic resonance images were averaged to yield the Pi at a voxel level. The overall Pi for the combined arterial territories was calculated to ensure that Pi was in the range of 0 to 1. Sanctuary sites were identified as regions with Pi <0.1.

Results: There were 154 patients (63% men; median age, 69 years; and interquartile range, 57-78 years). The magnetic resonance imaging scan used for segmentation was performed at a median interval of 35 (interquartile range, 3-66) days after stroke onset. Sanctuary sites were present in the frontal (gyrus rectus, the paracentral lobule, and orbitofrontal and precentral gyrus), parietal (postcentral, supramarginal, and angular gyrus, superior and inferior parietal lobule, and precuneus and posterior cingulate), and occipital cortex (cuneus, middle, and superior occipital gyrus).

Conclusions: We propose that following vessel occlusion, there are cortical regions with a low Pi, which we termed sanctuary sites. The anatomic basis for this observation is the compensatory capacity of leptomeningeal collaterals.

The spotted ragged-tooth shark, , is widely distributed in subtropical continental coastal seas. In South Africa, it is commonly found along the entire south and east coasts, including the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (IWP) in the far north, which is the largest Marine Protected Area on the South African coast. Pregnant females occur there for much of the year, with the largest aggregations in summer.

Total body irradiation (TBI) has been an important component of myeloablative and nonmyeloablative conditioning regimens for allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for decades. Playing a dual role, both cytotoxic and immuno-suppressive, TBI eliminates residual disease while also impairing the immune system from rejecting the foreign donor cells being transplanted. Unlike chemotherapy, radiotherapy is not hampered by perfusion, diffusion, or the blood-barrier effect and can effectively treat sanctuary sites.

Article Synopsis
  • Rüppell's vultures are critically endangered due to human activities like habitat loss, climate change, and poisoning, affecting their nesting and breeding sites.
  • The study used species distribution modeling (SDM) with four algorithms to determine suitable habitats for these vultures in Kenya, using data from biodiversity and environmental sources.
  • Findings revealed that most suitable habitats are outside protected areas, highlighting the need for establishing vulture sanctuaries in these regions to improve conservation efforts.

Background: Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most common form of cutaneous T cell lymphoma. While multiple guidelines provide treatment recommendations, there are currently no clear treatment algorithms for MF. Chlormethine gel is recommended by major treatment guidelines as a first-line option for stage IA-IIA disease, and, on the basis of these guidelines, used in combination with other therapies in patients with advanced-stage MF in clinical practice.
