Coherent X-ray imaging is an active field at synchrotron sources. The images rely on the available coherent flux over a limited field of view. At many synchrotron beamlines a double-crystal monochromator (DCM) is employed in a standard nondispersive arrangement. For coherent diffraction imaging it is advantageous to increase the available field of view by increasing the spatial coherence length (SCL) of a beam exiting such a DCM. Here, Talbot interferometry data together with ray-tracing simulations for a (+ - - +) four-reflection experimental arrangement are presented, wherein the first two reflections are in the DCM and the final fourth reflection is asymmetric at grazing exit. Analyses of the interferometry data combined with the simulations show that compared with the beam exiting the DCM a gain of 76% in the SCL was achieved, albeit with a factor of 20 reduction in flux density, which may not be a severe penalty at a synchrotron beamline. Previous efforts reported in the literature to increase the SCL that employed asymmetric crystal diffraction at grazing incidence are also discussed. A much reduced SCL is found presently in simulations wherein the same asymmetric crystal is set for grazing incidence instead of grazing exit. In addition, the present study is compared and contrasted with two other means of increasing the SCL. These are (i) focusing the beam onto an aperture to act as a secondary source, and (ii) allowing the beam to propagate in vacuum an additional distance along the beamline.

Cyanobacterial cytochrome c6 (Cyt c6) is crucial for electron transfer between the cytochrome b6f complex and photosystem I (PSI), playing a key role in photosynthesis and enhancing adaptation to extreme environments. This study investigates the high-resolution crystal structures of Cyt c6 from PCC 7942 and PCC 6803, focusing on its dimerization mechanisms and functional implications for photosynthesis. Cyt c6 was expressed in using a dual-plasmid co-expression system and characterized in both oxidized and reduced states.

Correlative Raman-Voltage Microscopy Revealing the Localized Structure-Stress Relationship in Silicon Solar Cells.

Knowledge of localized strain at the micrometer scale is essential for tailoring the electrical and mechanical properties of ongoing thinning of crystal silicon (c-Si) solar cells. Thinning c-Si wafers below 110 m are susceptible to cracking in manufacturing due to the nonuniform stress distribution at a micrometer region, necessitating a rigorous technique to reveal the localized stress distribution correlating with its device electrical output. In this context, a Raman microscopy integrated with a photovoltage mapping setup with high resolution to the submicrometer scale is developed to acquire correlative Raman-voltage of the localized physical properties at the microcracks on the rear side of c-Si solar cells.

The compression behavior of iron oxyhydroxide ε-FeOOH is complex, with variations in its magnetic property and bonding character. In this study, in situ powder neutron diffraction experiments were conducted on ε-FeOOH and ε-FeOOD up to pressures exceeding 20 GPa to investigate a spin-reorientation (spin-flop) transition, hydrogen-bond (H-bond) symmetrization, and their correlation. The magnetic transition was observed at 8 GPa in both ε-FeOOH and ε-FeOOD.

The chemical reduction of a pyracylene-hexa--hexabenzocoronene-(HBC)-fused nanographene TPP was investigated with K and Rb metals to reveal its multi-electron acceptor abilities. The reaction of TPP with the above alkali metals, monitored by UV-vis-NIR and H NMR spectroscopy, evidenced the stepwise reduction process. The use of different solvents and secondary ligands enabled isolation of single crystals of three different reduced states of TPP with 1, 2, and 3 electrons added to its π-system.

Traditional tetrahedral-based mid-to-far infrared (MFIR) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals often face limitations due to the optical anisotropy constraints imposed by their highly symmetric structures. In contrast, the relatively rare trigonal pyramidal [TeS] functional unit characterized by its asymmetric structure and stereochemically active lone pair (SCALP), offers improved optical anisotropy, hyperpolarizability and a broader IR transparency range. Despite its potential, synthetic challenges have hindered the development of MFIR NLO crystals that incorporate this unit, with only one example reported to date.
