Heat pump drying is a low-carbon method of sludge drying. The operating temperature of a heat pump is generally not more than 70℃. To improve the drying efficiency of heat pump dryers, the effects of air parameters and additives on sludge drying characteristics at low temperatures were studied. The sludge drying experiments were conducted at an air temperature 50-70℃ and an air velocity of 0.5-1.7 m/s. The experimental results showed that the increase of air temperature, velocity and the addition ratio of additives can accelerate the sludge drying process. The average and maximum drying rates of sludge pre-conditioned by CaO and sawdust increased by 14.23% and 25.71%, respectively, compared with those of pure sludge. The two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that the influence of air temperature on the sludge drying was higher than that of air velocity. Five reference models were fitted by the drying experiment data. The Page model has the highest R, so it is the most suitable model to predict the drying time of sludge at low temperatures.

Heat pump drying technology based on sewage heat source is an eco-friendly sludge drying method. It can effectively reduce the pollution of natural water bodies by waste heat while reducing energy consumption. However, the drying characteristics of sludge in this case remain unclear.

Nowadays, Egypt is treating the Nile River Water to produce drinking water, and this process generates large amounts of waste, around 635 million m annually, which is called water treatment plant sludge (WTPS). This WTPS cost the government around 30 million US dollars to return it back to the Nile River in addition to negatively affecting the environment. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find environmentally friendly alternatives that reduce the impact of such an issue.

The production of organic-mineral fertilizers from sewage sludge is one of the ecological options in their management. Though, pharmaceuticals and their derivatives, which accumulate in the sludge, could be a problem due to their impacts on the environment. This manuscript aimed at better understanding of risks posed by antimicrobial agents (AAs) in sludge-based fertilizers.

In this study, we utilized drinking water treatment sludge (WTS) to produce adsorbents through the drying and calcination process. These adsorbents were then evaluated for their ability to remove azithromycin (AZT) from aqueous solutions. The L-500 adsorbent, derived from the calcination (at 500°C) of WTS generated under conditions of low turbidity in the drinking water treatment plant, presented an increase in the specific surface area from 70.

The modern metallurgical industry produces approximately 90% of the volume of all produced steel; for this, integrated technology based on fossil materials such as coal, fluxes, and especially iron ore is used. This industry generates large amounts of waste and by-products at almost all stages of production. Alternative iron and steel production technologies based on iron ore, methane, or pure hydrogen are also not waste-free.
