In Santa Quitéria City, part of the population uses surface water for potation. These waters do not undergo any treatment before consumption. As the region has a deposit of uranium, assessing water quality becomes important. In the present study, the uranium activity concentration (AC) in becquerels per liter was determined in water samples from six points. Univariate statistics showed differences between the soluble and the particulate fraction (soluble AC > particulate AC). The particulate fraction showed no variation in AC among the six points. On the other hand, the soluble fraction and the total fraction presented different ACs between them. The multivariate statistics allowed to separate the soluble from the particulate fraction of the points. The same tools applied to the total fraction made it possible to differentiate the sampling points, grouping them ((#1, #2); (#3, #4), and (#5, #6)). The maximum mean value of AC found was 0.177 Bq∙L, corresponding to 25% of the chemical toxicity limit (0.72 Bq∙L). The maximum mean dose rate, 2.25 µSv∙year, is lower than the considered negligible dose rate (> 10 µSv∙year). The excess lifetime cancer risk was 10, two orders of magnitude smaller than the threshold considered for taking action. The assessment parameters used in this work indicate that the risk due to the uranium intake by the local population is negligible.

Recovery in soil carbon stocks but reduced carbon stabilization after near-natural restoration in degraded alpine meadows.

Sci Rep

Grassland Technique Extension Station of Gansu Province, Lanzhou, 730000, Gansu, China.

Near-natural restoration is acknowledged as an effective strategy for enhancing soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration in degraded grasslands. However, the alterations in SOC fractions, stability, and relative sequestration capacity after restoration of degraded alpine meadows remain uncertain. In this study, we utilized the degraded alpine meadows on the northeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau as a research area, with grazing as the control (CK) and restoration of 20 years of banned grazing (BG) and growing season resting grazing (RG).

The presence of aquatic biopolymeric organic carbon of high (> 10 - 20 kDa) molecular weight (high-MW OC) in drinking water produced from surface water affects its biological stability which may cause regrowth in disinfectant-free distribution. This study compares two analytical methods for determining the concentration of aquatic high-MW OC, namely LC-OCD (liquid chromatography - organic carbon detection) and PHMOC (particulate and colloidal high-molecular weight OC). LC-OCD entails prefiltration of the water sample, chromatographical separation of the relevant biopolymer (BP) OC-fraction, and in-line OC detection.

Impacts of acid mine drainage remediation in the largest gold mine of Latin America on natural water bodies in the Dominican Republic.

Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, Facultad de Ciencias, Zona Universitaria, Distrito Nacional, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Impacts of the acid mine drainage (AMD) remediation are investigated on the largest gold mine in Latin America, located in the Dominican Republic. Geochemical analysis of suspended matter in water performed in 2022 on water bodies located downstream to the mine, namely, the Margajita River and Lake Hatillo, are compared with analyses made in 2007, before the AMD remediation. The results for the Margajita River show a strong decrease in heavy metal and metalloid concentrations in the dissolved phase for Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sb, and Pb (between 89.

Exploring the composition of regional soil organic carbon (SOC) components and identifying their influencing factors are of utmost importance to deeply understand the potential mechanisms of SOC change in cropland soil. Based on data from 871 soil sampling points, this study explored the characteristics of soil particulate and mineral-associated organic carbon (POC and MAOC) in the surface soil of cropland and the relationships with climate, terrain, soil texture, agricultural land-use type, and fertilization across the Sichuan basin using analysis of variance, correlation analysis, and a random forest model. The results showed that the average content of POC and MAOC in the surface soil of cropland was 5.

Coastal bays link terrestrial and oceanic carbon reservoirs and play important roles in marine carbon cycles. Particulate organic carbon (POC) produced by phytoplankton is a major autochthonous carbon source in coastal bays. Previous studies on the fate of POC produced by phytoplankton mainly focused on the relationship between phytoplankton and zooplankton in classic food webs, while our knowledge on the roles of bacterioplankton is still limited, particularly in bays under highly intensive aquaculture activities.
