We performed a structural analysis of aggregates formed by two types of trimeric surfactants based on quaternary ammonium salts─linear-type 3Clin--Q and star-type 3Ctris--Q─featuring varying alkyl chain lengths () and spacer chain lengths () in aqueous solutions. We performed rheology, dynamic light scattering, and small-angle X-ray scattering measurements on the trimeric surfactants and investigated the effects of the alkyl chain length, spacer chain length, spacer skeleton structure, and surfactant concentration on their aggregation behavior. Linear-type 3Clin-3-Q transitioned from gel solutions to worm-like micelles at high concentrations, and 3Clin-3-Q became gel solutions over a wide range of concentrations. In contrast, all other studied surfactants formed ellipsoidal micelles. The minor and major axes of the ellipsoidal micelles formed by liner-type 3Clin-3-Q increased with the increasing alkyl chain length. As the spacer chain length of 3Clin--Q increased from 3 to 6, and as the spacer skeleton expanded from linear-type 3Clin--Q to star-type 3Ctris--Q, the surfactants formed ellipsoidal micelles without the formation of aggregates with a high-order structure, demonstrating this behavior over a broad concentration range.

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) play crucial disinfectant roles in healthcare, industry, and domestic settings. Most commercially utilized QACs like benzalkonium chloride have a common architectural theme, leading to a rise in bacterial resistance and urgent need for novel structural classes. Some potent QACs such as chlorhexidine (CHX) and octenidine (OCT) feature a bolaamphiphilic architecture, comprised of two cationic centers at the molecular periphery and a non-polar region connecting them; these compounds show promise to elude bacterial resistance mechanisms.

A series of biomass-based linear aliphatic polyesters are synthesized by combining sebacic acid (SA) (C10 diacid) and 1,18-octadecanedioic acid (OA) (C18 diacid) with a series of diols with varied alkyl chain lengths (C2 to C10 diols). SA and OA are obtainable from castor oil and palm oil, respectively. The reaction extent (polymerization extent) is high (≥96%) in all cases, and the number-average molecular weight (M) is 10 000-43 000 g mol after purification.

Genotype-Phenotype Correlation in Progressive External Ophthalmoplegia: Insights From a Retrospective Analysis.

Neuropathol Appl Neurobiol

Department of Neurology, Shandong Key Laboratory of Mitochondrial Medicine and Rare Diseases, Research Institute of Neuromuscular and Neurodegenerative Diseases, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong, China.

Background: Progressive external ophthalmoplegia (PEO) is a classic manifestation of mitochondrial disease. However, the link between its genetic characteristics and clinical presentations remains poorly investigated.

Methods: We analysed the clinical, pathological and genetic characteristics of a large cohort of patients with PEO, based on the type of their mtDNA variations.

In this article we describe research on the synthesis and characterization of a family of "Janus" amphiphiles composed of disaccharide head groups and alkaloid units joined together via a methylene linker, and bearing a lateral aliphatic chain of varying length. The condensed phases formed by self-organization of the products as a function of temperature were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, thermal polarized light microscopy, and small angle X-ray scattering, allied with computational modelling and simulations. Structural studies on heating specimens from the solid showed that some homologues exhibited lamellar, columnar and bicontinuous mesophases, whereas the same homologues revealed different phase sequences on cooling from the amorphous liquid.

Objective: To evaluate the effect and safety of Chinese medicine (CM) Fuzheng Huazhuo Decoction (FHD) in treating patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who persistently tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted at Shanghai New International Expo Center shelter hospital in China between April 1 and May 30, 2022. Patients diagnosed as COVID-19 with persistently positive SARS-CoV-2 reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test results for ⩾8 days after diagnosis were enrolled.
